Arithmetic Expressions Practice Worksheet
Grade 7 Mathematics
Instructions
This worksheet is designed to help you practice working with arithmetic expressions,
including evaluating, comparing, and manipulating terms and brackets. Answer all ques-
tions carefully, showing your reasoning where required. Use the concepts of terms, brack-
ets, and properties like commutative and distributive properties as needed.
Part 1: Simple Expressions
1. Write arithmetic expressions for the following situations and evaluate their values:
(a) Priya buys 3 notebooks at 45 each and a pen for 15. Write an expression for
the total cost and find its value.
(b) A school bus travels 12 km each day from Monday to Friday. Write an ex-
pression for the total distance traveled in a week and evaluate it.
(c) Ravi has 50 candies and gives away 5 candies each to 7 friends. Write an
expression for the number of candies he has left and find its value.
2. Choose your favorite number between 10 and 20. Write at least four different
arithmetic expressions using two numbers and any of the operations (+, −, ×, ÷)
that evaluate to your chosen number.
3. Fill in the blanks to make the expressions equal:
(a) 19 + 7 = __ + 5
(b) 15 × __ = 45 + 15
(c) 72 ÷ __ = 8 × 3
(d) 56 − __ = 42
Part 2: Comparing Expressions
4. Compare the following pairs of expressions using <, >, or = without calculating
their exact values. Explain your reasoning.
(a) 156 + 234 __ 157 + 232
(b) 298 − 123 __ 297 − 122
(c) 45 × 8 __ 46 × 8
(d) 128 + 345 __ 127 + 347
(e) 213 − 89 __ 214 − 88

5. Arrange the following expressions in ascending order of their values. Use reasoning
to compare without computing exact values where possible.
(a) 78 − 29
(b) 56 + 23
(c) 88 ÷ 2
(d) 15 × 5
(e) 76 − 28
Part 3: Terms and Brackets
6. For each expression, rewrite it as a sum of its terms and identify the terms:
(a) 45 − 12 + 7
(b) 6 × 4 + 9
(c) 32 − 3 × 5 + 10
(d) 19 + 8 − 4 × 2
7. Evaluate the following expressions by first identifying and evaluating the terms:
(a) 27 − 5 + 9
(b) 4 × 6 + 12 − 3
(c) 15 ÷ 3 + 2 × 4
(d) 8 × 3 − 6 + 10 ÷ 2
8. Remove the brackets and rewrite the following expressions to have the same value:
(a) 25 + (10 + 8)
(b) 50 − (12 + 7)
(c) 36 + (15 − 9)
(d) 48 − (20 − 5)
Part 4: Story-Based Problems
9. Write an expression for each situation, identify its terms, and find its value:
(a) A shop sells apples at 30 per kg and oranges at 50 per kg. Meena buys 2 kg
of apples and 3 kg of oranges. What is the total cost?
(b) A library has 120 books. On Monday, 15 books are borrowed, and on Tuesday,
25 more are borrowed. How many books are left?
(c) A school organizes a trip costing 200 per student. If 5 students from one class
and 3 from another join, what is the total cost?
2
10. Anil earns 15,000 per month. He spends 4,000 on rent, 3,000 on food, and 1,500
on transport each month. Write an expression for his annual savings and evaluate
it.
Part 5: Distributive Property
11. Use the distributive property to rewrite the following expressions without brackets:
(a) 3 × (5 + 7)
(b) 6 × (8 − 4)
(c) 4 × (9 + 3)
(d) 7 × (10 − 2)
12. Given 42 × 15 = 630, find the value of 52 × 15 using the distributive property.
13. Fill in the blanks to make the expressions equal using the distributive property:
(a) 5 × (6 + 4) = 5 × 6 + __ × __
(b) (7 + 3) × 8 = 7 × __ + __ × 8
(c) 4 × (9 − 2) = 4 × __ − __ × 2
Part 6: Creative Expressions
14. Using the numbers 2, 4, and 6 exactly once, and the operations +, −, ×, ÷, and
brackets as needed, create expressions to get as many different values as possible
between 0 and 20.
15. Using four 5’s and the operations +, −, ×, ÷, and brackets as needed, create
expressions to get the values 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
16. Using the numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 exactly once in any order, and the operations
+, −, ×, ÷, and brackets as needed, create an expression that evaluates to 100.
Part 7: Reasoning and Comparison
17. Identify which of the following expressions are equal to 76 − 24 − 15 without com-
puting their values. Rewrite using terms or remove brackets as needed:
(a) 76 − (24 + 15)
(b) 77 − 25 − 15
(c) −24 + 76 − 15
(d) 76 − (23 + 16)
18. Add brackets to the following expressions to achieve the indicated values:
(a) 45 − 10 + 5 = 30
3
(b) 24 ÷ 3 + 5 = 13
(c) 18 − 6 × 2 = 6
