This set of problems is intended for practice purposes. This will help the
students understand the subject in depth. Students must solve each problem
on their own with absolute understanding and submit it in the google
classroom.
1. What is sampling? Discuss the main objects of sampling.
2. What is simple random sampling? Write a short note on simple random
sampling with replacement (SRSWR) and simple random sampling with-
out replacement (SRSWOR)
3. Explain clearly the concept of Sampling Distribution of a statistic.
4. Discuss the concept of ’standard error’ of a statistic. What does the
standard error of a statistic measure?
5. How do you distinguish between ’standard error’ and ’standard deviation’
?
6. The mean of a certain normal distribution is equal to the standard error
of the mean of samples of 25 from the distribution. Find the probability
that the mean of a sample of 49 from the distribution will be negative.
(Given: Area under standard normal curve to the left of the ordinate at
1.4 is 0.9192).
7. The guaranteed average life of a certain type of electric light bulbs is 1000
hours with a standard deviation of 125 hours. It is proposed to sample
the output so as to assure that 90% of the bulbs do not fall short of the
guaranteed average by more than 2.5%. What should be the minimum
size of the sample? (The area under standard normal curve from z = 0 to
z = 1.28 is 0.4000).
8. The values of a characteristic x of a population containing six units are
given below: 2, 6, 5, 1, 7, 3. Take all possible samples of size two and verify
that the mean of the population is exactly equal to the mean of the sample
means.
9. A population consists of 5 numbers 2, 3, 6, 8, 11. Consider all possible sam-
ples of size two which can be drawn with replacement from this population.
Calculate the S.E. of sample means.

10. Ages of 5 persons have been recorded (in years) as 14, 19, 17, 20, 25. For
random samples of size 3 drawn without replacement from this population,
obtain the sampling distribution of x̄. Show that the mean of x̄ equals
the population mean and obtain the S.E. of x̄, directly from the sampling
distribution and also by using the formula.
11. The mean of a certain population is equal to the standard error of mean of
random samples of size 100 from that population. Find out the standard
error of the mean of random samples of size 36 from that population, in
terms of µ. (Assume that the population size is very large.)
12. A random sample of size 25 is taken from a N (µ, σ 2 ) with µ = 30 and
σ 2 = 16. Would the probability that the sample mean would lie between
25 and 35 be greater than 0.99?
13. Assume that the age of 2000 students of a college are normally distributed
with mean 20 years and standard deviation 4 years. 60 samples consisting
of 25 students each are obtained. In how many samples would you expect
to find the mean between 19 years and 21 years?
14. Samples of certain size are drawn from a population normally distributed.
It is found that the mean and variance of the sampling distribution of
55
the sample variance are 12 and 275
72 , respectively. Find the population
variance and the sample size. Hence find the probability of the sample
variance exceeding 13.025. [ Given χ20.001,11 = 31.26]l
