1 Show why the sum of the interior angles of any hexagon must be 720 °.
We can make 4 triangles in a hexagon, and the sum of all the sides of a triangle is 180°.

So if there are 4 triangles in a hexagon, so 180° x 4 = 720°. [2]

2 a Work out the sum of the interior angles of a regular octagon.

My formula to work out the sum of the interior angles in any polygon is (n - 2) x 180°, where, [2]
n = number of sides. So octagon has 8 sides, so (8 - 2) x 180° = 6 x 180° = 1080°
b Work out the interior angle of a regular octagon.
There are 8 sides in an octagon. So, if it is a regular octagon, then we will divide 1080° by 8, [1]
where, 1080° is sum of the interior angles of a regular octagon, 8 is the number of sides. So, 1080°/8 = 135°.
3

Calculate the size of angle a.

The sum of all the exterior angles of any polygon is 360°. So a° + 52° + 55° + 58° + 61° [2]
+ 64° = 360°. So, a° + 290° = 360°, So, a° = 360° - 290°, a° = 70°.
4 ABCD is a trapezium. CDE is a straight line.

Work out the size of

a angle x x° = 35° (alternate angles)

b angle y 85° + 35° = y° (exterior angle of a triangle is equal to two interior opposite [2]
angles of a triangle. So, 85° + 35° = 120°, so y° = 120°.

The sides of this right-angled triangle are 12 cm, 13 cm and a cm.

Show that a is an integer.

H² = B² + P², 13² = 12² + a², 169 = 144 + a², a² = 169 - 144, a² = 25,

a = √25, a = 5cm, so a is an integer. [2]

6 The floor of a room is a rectangle.

The sides of the rectangle are 4.5 m and 7.5 m.

Calculate the length of the diagonal of the rectangle.
H² = B² + P², H² = 7.5² + 4.5², H² = 56.25 + 20.25, H² = 76.5, H = √76.5

H = 8.7 m ≈ 9m. [2]
