What Is A Software Development Methodology?

This document describes different software development methodologies. It explains that a software methodology is an approach to interpreting and planning the development of information systems. It then summarizes five popular methodologies: the waterfall model is suitable for small projects with clear requirements but inflexible for more complex projects, the spiral model reflects a more parallel and concurrent development, prototypes allow validating functionality before developing the final solution, the

What is a Software Development Methodology?

A software methodology is an approach, a way of interpreting reality or the discipline in

issue, which in this particular case would correspond to Software Engineering. In fact, the
methodology aimed at software development is considered as a structure used to
plan and control the procedure for creating a specialized information system.

That said, we will now show what some of the development methodologies are that you
they will allow knowing which would be the most appropriate for your business.

1. Waterfall Model
If you have ever ventured into the world ofSoftware Development, surely you have come across in
some moment with the waterfall model. If not, it is worth noting that in this model each stage
represents a development unit with a short break in the middle. Therefore, each subsequent
the stage begins as soon as the previous one has concluded, and those breaks are used for
client-side confirmations.

Additionally, this is considered the traditional method of explaining the development process.
software in software engineering, which is currently seen as outdated. However,
it is still applied to projects with clear goals and requirements that demand up to 100 hours of
development, especially considering that this approach allows businesses to get rid of paperwork
unnecessary, regular meetings that take up a lot of time and delays in their processes of
business.

This is why this is a great option for small projects where all aspects
ofsoftware development process they are known in advance, but a bad solution for
complicated projects, since it is a quite inflexible model.

2. Spiral Model
The spiral methodology reflects the relationship between tasks and rapid prototypes, greater parallelism and
concurrency in design and construction activities. The spiral method must still be
methodically planned, with tasks and deliverables identified for each step in the spiral.

3. Prototype Methodology
It is a specialized development procedure that allows developers the possibility of

and make the fundamental changes before creating the final authentic solution. In fact, the

what happens with the waterfall method.

4. Rapid Application Development (RAD)

With the aim of providing quick results, this is an approach that is intended to deliver
an excellent development process with the help of other approaches, but also, it is designed to
increase the viability of the entire software development process to highlight participation
of an active user.

5. Extreme Programming Methodology (XP)

As an agile software engineering methodology, extreme programming is known
currently as a methodology of XP (eXtreme Programming). This methodology is used
mainly to avoid the development of functions that are not currently needed, but above all
to handle complicated projects. However, their peculiar methods may take longer
time, as well as human resources compared to other approaches.
