Q.1 Each of the following matrices determines a linear map from ℝ into ℝ :

Find a basis as well as the dimension of the kernal and the image of each of the map.

Q.2 Consider a basis 𝑆 = {𝑡 + 1, 𝑡 − 1, (𝑡 − 1) } of the vector space 𝑃 (𝑡) over ℝ.


Find coordinate vector [𝑣] of 𝑣 = 2𝑡 − 2𝑡 + 1 relative to the basis 𝑆.
Q.3 Let 𝑇: ℝ → ℝ be the linear transformation defined by
𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (𝑥 + 𝑦, 2𝑧 − 𝑥)
If 𝐵 is the standard ordered basis of ℝ and 𝐵 be the standard ordered basis of ℝ then
(i) Find matrix representation of 𝑇 relative to basis 𝐵 and 𝐵 .
(ii) If 𝐵 = {(1,0, −1), (1,1,1), (1,0,0)} 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = {(0,1), (1,0)}
then find matrix representation of 𝑇 relative to basis 𝐵 and 𝐵 .
Q.4 Let 𝑉 be the vector space of functions with basis 𝑆 = {𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝑡, 𝑐𝑜𝑠3𝑡, 𝑒 }
If 𝐷: 𝑉 → 𝑉 be the differential operator defined by 𝐷 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) then
find matrix representation of 𝐷 with respect to given basis.
Q.5 Find change of basis matrix 𝑃 from the usual basis 𝐸 of ℝ to a basis 𝑆, the change of basis
matrix 𝑄 from 𝑆 to 𝐸, and the coordinates of 𝑣 = (𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐) relative to 𝑆 where
(i) 𝑆 = {(1,1,0), (0,1,2), (0,1,1)}
(ii) 𝑆 = {(1,2,1), (1,3,4), (2,5,6)}
Q.6 Let 𝑇: ℝ → 𝑃 (𝑥) be the linear transformation defined by 𝑇(𝑎, 𝑏) = 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑎𝑥 . Consider the
following bases𝐵 = {(1, −1), (2, 0)} 𝑜𝑓 𝑅 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵 = {1, 𝑥, 𝑥 } of 𝑃 (𝑥).
I. Find 𝐴 ;
II. Verify that [𝑇(1, 0)] = 𝐴 [(1, 0)] .
Q.7 Let 𝑉 = 𝑃 (𝑥). Consider the following ordered bases of 𝑉, 𝐵 = {1, 1 + 𝑥, 1 + 𝑥 + 𝑥 }
and 𝐵 = {𝑥, 1, 1 + 𝑥 }. Find the Transition matrix 𝐵 relative to 𝐵 .

Q.8 Let 𝐷: 𝑃 (𝑥) → 𝑃 (𝑥) be given by 𝐷(𝑎 + 𝑎 𝑥 + 𝑎 𝑥 + 𝑎 𝑥 ) = 𝑎 + 2𝑎 𝑥 + 3𝑎 𝑥 .


Compute 𝑁𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝐷 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑘 𝐷.

Q.9 Let 𝑇: 𝑅 → 𝑅 be the linear operator whose matrix relative to the ordered basis
