Introduction to AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are
programmed to think and learn. It includes problem-solving, learning, and decision-making
capabilities.

History of AI
AI research began in the 1950s with the idea of creating machines that could mimic human
intelligence. Milestones include expert systems in the 1970s, machine learning in the 1990s, and
deep learning breakthroughs in the 2010s.

Machine Learning
Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI that enables systems to learn from data and improve
performance without being explicitly programmed. Supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement
learning are its main types.

Neural Networks & Deep Learning

Neural networks are computational models inspired by the human brain. Deep learning, a branch of
neural networks, has enabled advances in computer vision, speech recognition, and natural
language understanding.

Natural Language Processing

NLP focuses on the interaction between computers and human language. Applications include
chatbots, translation systems, and sentiment analysis.

Applications of AI
AI is applied in diverse fields: healthcare (diagnostics, drug discovery), finance (fraud detection,
algorithmic trading), e-commerce (recommendation systems, personalized marketing), and
autonomous systems (self-driving cars).

Ethics and Challenges

AI raises concerns such as bias, privacy, job displacement, and accountability. Responsible AI
development requires fairness, transparency, and regulation.
Case Studies
AI in Healthcare
AI assists in medical imaging, early diagnosis, and personalized treatment recommendations. IBM
Watson, for example, has been used in oncology decision support.

AI in Finance
Financial institutions use AI for fraud detection, customer service chatbots, and high-frequency
trading.

AI in E-commerce
Platforms like Amazon use AI-powered recommendation engines to personalize customer
experiences and boost sales.
Key Takeaways
- AI is the simulation of human intelligence in machines.
- Machine Learning and Deep Learning are key subfields of AI.
- NLP enables computers to process and understand human language.
- AI is transforming industries like healthcare, finance, and e-commerce.
- Ethical concerns around AI require careful consideration and regulation.
Exam Practice Questions
