DATE and TIME SPENT WHAT I DID SUMMARY AND REFLECTIONS New vocabulary
UNIT
(hours; minutes) (Story titles, etc.) (summary of the story and notes/thoughts about my
(Jan. 1, 2023) work, ONE story, ONE report).

Aug. 2 . 2025 1 hour 51 I watched a The movie is about a woman who got cursed after 咒語, spell
Unit 7 minutes Taiwanese found breaking a religious taboo during a visit to a
footage village. She records her life as she struggles to 詛咒, curse
supernatural folk protect her daughter from the supernatural forces
恐怖, scary
horror film called haunting them. Watching the movie helped me
“Incantation” hear natural spoken Mandarin in a more emotional 儀式, ritual
and suspenseful context. I noticed how tone
changes in moments of fear, and emergency. 禁忌, taboo
Some phrases were repeated often and with their
body language, helped me understand.

Aug .3. 2025 22 minutes 開始和結束 story, The story 開始和結束 takes you through a couple’s 藍天, blue sky
Unit 7 Read, listened, relationship in four seasons. In spring, they stand
recorded me on a bridge and look at each other and the sky. In
reading the story summer, they are holding hands walking on the 海灘, beach
beach and hugging with love. In autumn, they sit
in a park, one person feels close to the other but
擁抱, embrace / hug
the other feels the distance growing. The story
ends in winter when they say goodbye and go 落葉, fallen leaves
separate ways at a subway station.

I looked up the word 落葉 to understand the

autumn part better. Also pronouncing 擁抱 was
hard at first as I kept messing up the tones so I
practiced it a few times. When I recorded myself, I
spoke too fast at first, so I re-recorded to slow
down and make each word clearer. I like this story
because it uses the 4 seasons to show how the
relationship changes, it made the language feel
really poetic and beautiful.

Aug 5 2025 45 mins I watched one The episode showed how Tong Yao joins the 遊戲, game
episode of the esports team "ZGDX" after graduating from
Unit 8 Chinese drama 你微 college as the only female player. A lot of people 隊友, teammate
笑时很美 on netflix and some of the members doubted her ability just
比賽, competition
because she’s a woman, but she kept playing
seriously to prove herself. The drama is a mix of
team competition and friend to lovers romance.
Watching this gave me listening practice to
Mandarin during natural conversation in daily life.
It was entertaining to watch and also learn
chinese.

Aug 6 2025 24 mins 少林寺 story, Read, The story 少林寺 talks about the temple’s history 少林寺, Shaolin Temple
listened, recorded and its famous kung fu. It explains that many
Unit 8 me reading the people go there every year to learn kung fu. The 功夫, kung fu
story temple is also known for its stone pagodas and
石塔, stone pagoda
stone tablets, which show Chinese history from
long ago before paper was common. The story 石碑, stone tablet
ends by telling us that 少林寺 is the “number one
temple in China.” I looked up the word 石碑 to 寺廟, temple
understand what it is exactly. I also practiced
saying 功夫, 石塔, and 石碑 until I could read them 古老, ancient
properly without struggles. This story is quite
歷史, history
interesting since it shows both the martial arts and
the cultural heritage at 少林寺. Reading it out loud
was a little difficult at first, but recording myself 紙, paper
and listening to the example recording helped me
slow down and read more clearly. 觀光, sightseeing

Aug 10 2025 30 mins 給媽媽的花, story, This story is about a history teacher who brings 有名, famous
Read, listened, flowers to her mother every year on her birthday.
Unit 9 recorded me She does this because her mother loves flowers 歷史老師, history teacher
reading the story but she can't go to her garden in the winter. The
修車, fix cars
story talks about her childhood and explains how
her parents worked very hard after moving to a 清理房子, clean the house
new country. To support her daughters' education,
her mother worked long hours every day. Even 爐子, stove
though she was tired after work, she still helped
them with schoolwork. When it's their birthday 臥室, bedroom
she'd cook cakes, play the violin, and take them
衛生間, bathroom
swimming. Now that her parents are old and
retired, her father reads and her mother spends 花園, garden
her time in her garden. That is why the teacher
brings flowers to her mother every winter birthday.

I had to look up the word 爐子 as I couldn't guess

what object / thing it was. I also practiced saying
歷史老師 a few times since this word was so
tongue tricky for me, the shi sound sounded really
awkward when I was reading it. I liked this story
because it showed how much the mother
sacrificed just to give her daughters a better
future. It felt very touching and made me think
about how my parents show their love for me.
Aug 11 2025 22 mins Watched an I watched an episode of Doraemon in Chinese. 你騙人, you’re lying
episode of Nobita had a problem with studying for his test
Unit 9 Doraemon in and went to Doraemon for help. Doraemon took 你在幹嘛, what are you doing
chinese out one of his special gadgets, the memory bread,
厲害, cool / awesome
which helped Nobita memorize everything about
the test after eating the bread with printed words
of the notes. Nobita was excited and getting As on
his test, but then he started to depend too much
on the gadget. But at the end he learnt a lesson
that it is better to try by himself instead of always
relying on Doraemon’s special gadgets.

This was fun and easy to watch and learn

because I already know Doraemon in English, but
hearing it in Chinese helped me connect those
gadgets to new words. I learnt a few new phrases
and I also recognized some words like 學校 and
老師, which I felt really happy as I had made
progress in learning. The speaking was quite fast
so I had to replay some parts, but it was still a
good listening practice.
Aug 13 2025 30 mins 揚子鰐 story, Read, This story is about a 中國鰐魚 called 揚子鰐. The 揚子鰐, Yangtze alligator
listened, recorded writer grew up in 宣城, a city near the 揚子江,
Unit 10 me reading the where there used to be many 揚子鰐. After 宣城, a city in China
story finishing university, the narrator returned home to
鱷魚, alligator
help protect them. It describes how 揚子鰐 behave
in different seasons. In winter, they hibernate and 出生, be born
do not eat, drink, or come out, in spring, they
return, and in summer, people take their eggs 放回, put back
indoors, and after two months, baby 揚子鰐 hatch
before being released back into the 揚子江 once 保護, protect
they grow. Now, there are more 揚子鰐 than
before, and they can also be seen in zoos in
China and other countries. The writer is happy
because they helped 揚子鰐 survive. I also
practiced saying 揚子鰐 a few times because it
was difficult at first, and together with 揚子江 it felt
so much like a tongue twister. When I tried to read
these 2 words quickly, I tripped over the sounds
and got the tones wrong. I had to slow down
reading them more carefully and repeat a few
times until I get it right and used to saying the
words smoothly. I liked this story because it
showed how people can protect animals and bring
them back from being rare.
Aug 13 2025 13 mins Watched a youtube Since I was struggling with tones I watched a No vocab
video called “Master youtube video called “Master Chinese Tones |
Unit 10 Chinese Tones | Pronunciation Training.” The teacher explained the
Pronunciation four tones and the neutral tone and gave
Training” examples that are pretty easy to understand. She
also compared tones to the changes in pitch,
which helped me think of them more like sounds in
music other than marks on a page. I was still a bit
confused with the tones especially the third tone,
but practicing along with the video made it easier,
and I started to say them more accurately and
smoothly. This video helped me with my struggle
with tones.
Aug 15 2025 25 mins 我的生日story, This story is about a girl’s 10th birthday. In China, 蠟燭, candle
Read, listened, the 10th birthday is important. On her birthday,
Unit 11 recorded me she wears new clothes and shoes, and she tells 紅色的信封, red envelope
reading the story us that in China you celebrate birthdays with your
枕頭, pillow
family, not friends. She also has eggs for
breakfast, noodles for lunch, and a cake with ten
candles for dinner. After dinner her grandparents
give her a red envelope with money, and she
plans to save some of it to give her father a red
envelope for his birthday next week. I learned that
in China, birthdays are usually celebrated with
family rather than friends, and certain foods carry
symbolic meanings. Eggs are connected to the
idea of birth, noodles represent growth, and a
cake with candles shows age and celebration.
When I read this story, I did not struggle very
much with the words or pronunciation. A few
sentences looked a little long but once I read them
aloud, they felt manageable.
Aug 15 2025 12 mins Watched a youtube I watched a youtube video called "The ULTIMATE No vocab
video called “The Guide to Learning Chinese Characters". I found it
Unit 11 ULTIMATE Guide to very helpful because it explained the structure of
Learning Chinese characters in a way that made them feel less
Characters” intimidating. Instead of thinking of every character
as a completely new picture, I learned that most
are actually built from a small set of parts that
repeat again and again. This made me feel more
comfortable since it feels easier to learn a system
rather than thousands of random shapes. One
challenge I still have is consistency. The video
suggested studying even just 30 minutes a day. I
think if I apply that and combine it with what I
learned from the tone practice video, I’ll make
progress.
Aug 20 2025 24 mins 石獅子story, Read, This story is about a house in China that has two 石獅子, stone lion
listened, recorded very old stone lions at the entrance. These lions
Unit 12 me reading the are older than the writer’s grandfather, and 古老, ancient
story generations of the family grew up with them. One
建筑, architecture / building
day, two men that work for a museum visited and
asked if they could buy the lions, since they were 博物館, museum
the only last two in the city. The grandfather
refused to sell them, but he decided to donate 歷史, history
them instead. He explained that he wanted more
people to see the lions, understand the history of 照片, photograph
Chinese architecture, and remember the culture
藝術, art
behind them. In the end, the stone lions were
moved to the museum, and the family took a
picture with them before they left.

When I was first reading this I completely

misunderstood this story because I thought the 石
獅子 were actual living lions. I imagined that
outside the grandfather’s big house, there were
two giant lions standing guard, like pets the family
kept for generations. When it said the father used
to play under the lions, I thought it meant he was
playing with them, which sounded a little
dangerous and strange, but then I looked at the
picture the story has and saw the stone lion.
That’s when it finally clicked to me, I was like ohhh
right, it’s a statue, not a real lion. I felt silly for not
realizing sooner.
Aug 21 2025 22 mins 中國新年story, This story talked about Chinese New Year, the 燈籠, lantern
unit 12 Read, listened, most important holiday in China. It is also called
recorded me Spring Festival because it celebrates the the start 鞭炮, firecrackers
reading the story of spring and the new year. During this holiday,
節日, festival / holiday
people decorate with red lanterns and red paper,
because red is seen as a happy and lucky color.
Children enjoy the celebration the most because
they can wear new clothes, play with firecrackers,
eat candy, and receive red envelopes with money
inside. And the adults are busy preparing foods,
dishes like chicken and fish, since those words
have lucky meanings. Families gather to watch the
New Year celebration program on TV, talk, sing,
and dance together. At midnight, people make
dumplings to welcome the new year. Since many
people return home from other cities to be with
their families, the festival is a big reunion and is
seen as the most important holiday in China.

I didn't have any trouble reading or understanding

this story because I already knew and did a
project on this holiday but it was still interesting to
read the details about how their food, colors, and
words all have different special meanings. Now I'm
really curious about what the atmosphere must
feel like in China during the holiday, I really want
to experience it.
Aug 10 - 23, About 12 hours, Watched 当我飞奔 I just finished watching 24 episodes of When I Fly /
2025 向你 C-drama for Towards You on Netflix, and I really enjoyed it. The
24 episodes, listening practice relationship between Su Zai Zai and Zhang Lu
Unit 12 about 30 Rang was a slow burn, which kept me hooked and
minutes each I binge watched a lot of episodes in a day. I liked
seeing how their relationship grew first and how
small moments made their feelings stronger. The
school setting and everyday events felt relatable,
and I found myself smiling and cheesing at the
little things they did for each other. The show was
sweet and really entertaining and kept me
invested the whole time which I completely forgot
that I was watching this for listening practice . I
spent a bit of time reading the english subtitles
and trying to match it with the chinese words I
heard. Paying attention to the actors’ body
language and facial expressions also helped me
understand what was happening when I didn’t
catch the subtitles. After some time, I noticed I
was starting to understand what they're saying
without needing the translation without even
realizing it, which I was pretty proud of myself. I
think watching an interesting show in the language
you're trying to learn is a super fun and useful way
to improve both your listening and reading skills!!
