Worksheet No. 03. Lecturer: Mr. T. Sinyangwe.

(1) Find the Fourier series of the function

(
−1 for − π < x < 0
f (x) =
1 for 0 < x < π

where f (x + 2π) = f (x).

(2) Find the Fourier series for the function

(
− π for − π < x < 0
f (x) = π 4
4 for 0 < xπ

and f (−π) = f (0) = f (π) = 0, f (x) = f (x + 2π) for all x. Hence, deduce that
π 1 1 1
= 1 − + − + ···
4 3 5 7

(3) Find the Fourier series of the function

0 for − π ≤ x ≤ 0

f (x) = 1 for 0 < x < π2

0 for π2 ≤ x ≤ π

1
(4) Obtain the Fourier series representation of the periodic function
(
0 for 0 < x < π
f (x) =
1 for π < x < 2π

(5) Obtain a Fourier series to represent the function

f (x) = |x| for − π < x < π.

Hence deduce,
π2 1 1 1
= 2 + 2 + 2 + ···
8 1 3 5
