COURSE CONTENT

Topic I: Measurement and Industrial Instrumentation.


1.1. Generalities (History and evolution of measuring instruments, use of the)
measurement and control instruments, types of maintenance.
1.2. Fundamentals of variable measurement (Definition, standard units,
measurement errors, information processing, elements of a system
of measurement, terms related to the signal and the measurement field).
1.3. Industrial instrumentation (Definition, classification, static characteristics and
dynamics, instrument classes, primary measurement elements
electronic transmitters, P-I and I-P converters, alarms, recorders
final control elements)
1.4. Identification and symbolism of the instruments (Graphic representation in the
P&ID - Piping and Instrumentation Diagram.
Theme II. Application of Mathematics as a Primary Tool for Analysis
Control Systems.
2.1. Laplace Transform (Introduction and mathematical foundations, theorems of
the Laplace transform, properties of the inverse Laplace transform
through partial fraction decomposition, solution of differential equations
linear.
2.2. Transfer Functions.
2.3. Block diagram (Sum point, bifurcation point, procedures of
drawings, reduction of block diagrams.

Theme III. Analysis and Design of Systems in the Time Domain.


3.1. First-order systems (Definition, impulse response, step, ramp,
parabolic, analysis of its response in transient and steady state.
3.2. Second order systems (Definition, impulse response, step response, ramp response)
parabolic, analysis of its response in transient and steady state.

3.3. Higher order systems (Definition, impulse response, step, ramp,


parabolic, analysis of its response in transient and steady state.

Theme IV. Basic Control Actions and Industrial Automatic Controllers.


4.1. Basic concepts.
4.2. Types of control ( Simple, multivariable, cascade relationship, feedforward )
advanced).
4.3. Basic control actions (Two-position or intermittent controllers,
proporcionales, integrales, derivativos, proporcional-integral, proporcional-derivativo,
proportional-integral-derivative.
4.4. Pneumatic controllers (Resistance and capacitance of pressure systems,
pneumatic regulators, pneumatic valves.
4.5. Hydraulic controllers ( Integral hydraulic controllers, Controllers
proportional hydraulics, shock absorbers.
4.6. Effects of comprehensive and derivative control actions on behavior of
system.
4.7. Tuning rules for PID controllers (Trial method and
error, Ziegler-Nichols rules).
