What are Determiners?
Determiners are words placed in front of nouns to make it clear what the noun refers to. They help
us understand which one, how many, or whose.
Types of Determiners:
1. Articles:
- 'a', 'an', and 'the'
- Example:
- I saw a dog.
- She is reading an interesting book.
- The sun rises in the east.
2. Demonstratives:
- 'this', 'that', 'these', 'those'
- Used to point to specific things.
- Example:
- This book is mine.
- Those apples are fresh.
3. Possessives:
- 'my', 'your', 'his', 'her', 'its', 'our', 'their'
- Show ownership.
- Example:
- My brother is playing.
- Their house is beautiful.
4. Quantifiers:
- 'some', 'many', 'much', 'few', 'little', 'several', 'any', 'no', 'all', 'most', 'enough'
- Show quantity.
- Example:
- Many students were present.
- I have some money.
5. Numbers:
- Cardinal (one, two, three...) and Ordinal (first, second, third...)
- Example:
- She has two cats.
- He came first in the race.
6. Distributives:
- 'each', 'every', 'either', 'neither'
- Refer to members of a group separately or in pairs.
- Example:
- Each student must submit homework.
- Neither answer is correct.
7. Interrogatives:
- 'what', 'which', 'whose'
- Used to ask questions.
- Example:
- What book are you reading?
- Whose pen is this?
Important Rules:
- Determiners always come before nouns.
- You cannot use two main determiners together.
- Articles are the most commonly used determiners.
