Networks, Signals, and Systems
Monsoon-2025
Prasad Krishnan, Aftab Hussain
Assignment 1
Submission Date & Time: 26-August-2025, 8PM (Hard Deadline : 28-August-2025,
8PM)
Instructions:
• You are free to discuss the problems with Assignment-group members, TAs,
and instructor if needed. There needs to be only ONE submission PER
group.
• All steps should be justified in detail.
• Any attempt at plagiarism will result in ZERO for the assignment, apart
from other academic consequences.
• TAs will likely (but not guaranteed) also upload the solutions (some solutions may not
be elaborate but gives essential ideas) after the submission. This will be treated as the
master document for evaluation.
• Evaluation done by TAs/Instructor will generally be final. Appeals on the
evaluation will generally not be permitted for assignments, unless the solution
is wrong for some question.
• Tutorial-Quiz based on the assignment will contain questions that are mildly-twisted
versions of assignment questions. So each student in the group is expected to clearly
understand all questions.
Remark: Some general remarks made in brackets are only to convey what the problem
itself is about. You can understand these in context.
1. (1 x 4 = 4 marks) Let x(t) be an arbitrary (real or complex) signal. Identify which of
the following signals are even or odd (no matter what x(t) is).
(a) Re(x2 (t)).
(b) x(|t|).
(c) x((t − 1)2 ) + x(−t).
(d) ex(−t) .
2. (3 x 5 + 6 = 21 marks) Consider a signal defined as follows. (below, u(t) denotes the
unit-step signal)
6 + t if t ∈ [−6, 0],
x(t) = 6u(t) if t ∈ (0, 2],
0 otherwise
1
(Exactly) Sketch the below signals y(t) (with proper markings on the graph) given by
the following equations.
(a) y(t) = x(t).
(b) y(t) = x(5 − t/3) + 0.5x(2(t + 3)) (perhaps if you describe this in words first and
then you might find it easier to sketch).
(c) y(t) = x(t − 2)x(t + 4) (describe this in words first and then you might find it easier
to sketch) .
P
(d) y(t) = k∈Z x(t − 10k).
(e) y(t) = (limτ →0 x(τ ))sin(6t).
Which of these signals are periodic, which are aperiodic, and why? Find the fundamental
period of the signals which are periodic, among the above. For the signals in parts (a)
and (d), calculate the (average) power and the energy.
3. (3 x 6 = 18 marks) Consider the systems given by the following relationships, where x(t)
is the input and y(t) is the output, as follows. (assume x(t) is a real signal throughout).
Answer the associated questions.
(a) (
et−x(t) if t < 0
y(t) = .
max(log t, 100) if t ≥ 0
Check whether this is linear, time-invariant, causal, and stable. Give proper argu-
ments for this and all further questions.
p
(b) y(t) = 5 |x(t)|−2x(t+1)−πx(t−1). Check whether this is time-invariant, causal,
and stable.
(c) y(t) = 5, ∀t. Check whether this is linear, time-invariant, and causal.
(d) y(t) = x(t) sin(α) + x(t − 1) cos β, for some real constants α, β. Check whether this
is linear, time-invariant, causal, and stable.
R t/2
(e) y(t) = −∞ h(t − τ )x(τ )dτ , where h(τ ) is some other real function of finite energy.
Check whether this is linear, time-invariant, and causal.
(f) y(t) = dtd x(t + t0 ), for some t0 being constant. Check whether this is linear, time-
invariant, causal, and stable.
4. Fourier Series : Solve the following questions from the end of chapter exercise of
chapter 3 of Signals and Systems (Oppenheim):
• 3.3 (Complex FS representation) (3 marks)
• 3.24 (Fourier series of common signals) (5 marks)
• 3.40 (properties of FS) (10 marks)
• 3.42 (Fourier coefficients of real signals) (10 marks)
• 3.46 (a) and 3.46 (c) (convolution and Parseval’s theorem) (6 marks)
5. (5 marks) Let x(t) = sin(2πf1 t + ϕ1 ) + ej(2πf2 t+ϕ2 ) denote a sum of sinusoidal signals.
Is this a periodic signal always? Are there relationships between f1 and f2 such that
this sum is always periodic? Are there examples of f1 and f2 such that this sum is not
periodic? Do the values of ϕ1 and ϕ2 influence the answer? Give your analysis in a few
statements. What happens if more sinusoids are added?
