The Students' Motivation in Learning Speaking English
Introduction
Motivation comes from the Latin word movere which means encouragement,
driving force or force that causes an action or deed. The word movere, in English,
is often equated with motivation, which means giving a motive, generating a
motive, giving rise to encouragement or a situation that gives rise to
encouragement. Motivation is an encouragement that makes people act or
behave in motivational ways which refer to the causes of a behavior, such as
factors that encourage someone to do or not do something. According to Uno
(2007), the definition of motivation is internal and external encouragement
within a person which is indicated by desire and interest, encouragement and
needs, hopes and ideals, appreciation and respect.
In learning English, motivation serves as one of the things that determine the
success of students. According to Liu (2010), motivation is one of the important
factors that influence student's achievement. The importance of motivation
influences many sectors. One of them is in the educational sector. Motivation has
a very important role in improving students' learning motivation. Studies confirm
the relationship between motivation and learning in improving students' learning
motivation. This is widely discussed by researchers in the form of research and
writing. According to Boonkit (2010), "motivation which is one of the keys to the
success of the teaching and learning process can be interpreted as an effort that
can encourage someone to do something or the driving force of the subject to
perform an action in a goal."
Besides, Tambunan & Siregar (2016) also states that motivation and educational
achievements as reflected in grade point average are positively correlated at all
levels of schooling, elementary through college. From a whole explanation
above can be illustrated that motivation is the combination of attempt plus
desire which gives the reasons for people's actions, desires, and needs to obtain
the objective of learning towards an objective. According to Lai (2011),
motivation refers to reasons that underlie behaviour that us characterized by
willingness and volition. Motivation involves a constellation of closely related
beliefs, perceptions, values, interests, and actions However, by getting
motivation students will be spirited in learning, so they will be motivated to study
English well. Teachers should be aware of significance of motivation in learners’
language learning and through some changes they can help learners increase
their motivation (Alizadeh, 2016).
Source of Motivation
Sources of motivation are classified into two, namely sources of motivation from
within (intrinsic) and sources of motivation from outside (extrinsic).
a. Intrinsic Motivation
What is meant by intrinsic motivation are motives that become active or function
without needing to be stimulated from outside, because within each individual
there is already an urge to do something. That is why intrinsic motivation can
also be said to be a form of motivation in which activities are initiated and
continued based on an impulse from within and is absolutely related to the
learning activity. Hayikaleng, Nair & Krishnasamy (2016) state that intrinsic
motivation (IM) in language learning refers to motivation to engage in an activity
because the activity is enjoyable and interesting to take part. Persons might be
motivated by enjoyment of the learning activity or desire to make themselves
feel better. Here the pupils are excited by their intrinsic motivation, they study
English because of their internal urge.
b. Extrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic motivation is motives that are active and function due to external
stimuli. Extrinsic motivation can also be said to be a form of motivation in which
activities are initiated and continued based on external encouragement that is
not related to oneself. Hayikaleng, Nair & Krishnasamy (2016) define that
extrinsic motivation (EM) refers to a performance which an individual performs in
order to gain rewards such as good grades or to increase salary, or alternatively
to avoid punishment. Here the pupils in learning English are encouraged by their
external eagerness, such as looking for a job, doing examinations, and so on.
