1. Open Doors winner’s skill set


Winning the Open Doors competition requires a firm grasp of the following concepts, theories
and themes:
 historical development and functioning of the Russian language;
 fundamental linguistic theory and core concepts of intercultural communication;
 functional styles of modern Russian;
 basic terminology of contemporary linguistics and literary criticism;
 methods of analyzing linguistic units and categories;
 history of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries;
 foundations and key concepts of literary theory and Russian literary tradition;
 cultural heritage and traditions of the peoples of Russia;
 major developments in the history of Russian culture;
The winner is expected to demonstrate a solid command of the following skills:
 analyzing and interpreting various linguistic and literary phenomena, processes, and text
types;
 providing well-reasoned inferences and conclusions;
 successfully implementing verbal and written communication strategies;
 identifying interdisciplinary connections among the covered fields of study and
understanding their significance for future professional activities in science, education, media,
