SPECIAL FUNCTIONS
Course Objective: To help the learners perceive the underlying various functions and acquire
insight into series solutions.
UNIT I: Series Solution of Differential Equations 12 periods
Introduction – Ordinary and singular points of an equation – Power series solution – Series solution
about a regular singular point – Frobenius Method – Problems.
UNIT II: Legendre polynomials 12 periods
Introduction – Legendre differential equation and Legendre polynomials – Rodrigue’s formula –
Generating function for Legendre polynomials – Recurrence relation- orthogonal property- Fourier
Legendre series.
UNIT III: Bessel’s Function 12 periods
Bessel functions of first and second kind – Generating function – Recurrence relation – Orthogonal
property.
UNIT – IV: Gamma and Beta function 12 periods
Gamma function – Properties of Gamma function – Standard problems – Beta function – Properties of
Beta function – Standard problems – Relationship between Beta function and Gamma function -
Applications.
UNIT V: Hermite polynomial 12 periods
Hermite polynomial of order n – Generating function – Alternating expressions for Hermite
polynomials – Orthogonal property – Recurrence relation – Simple problems.
