Materials You’ll Need
• Wax (soy wax, beeswax, paraffin, or palm wax)
• Wicks (cotton or wood wicks, sized for your container)
• Container or mold (glass jars, tins, silicone molds, etc.)
• Fragrance oil (optional – for scented candles)
• Color dye (optional – for colored candles)
• Double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over a pot of boiling water)
• Thermometer (helps you pour at the right temperature)
• Wick holders/stickers (to keep the wick in place)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the container
• Stick the wick in the center of your jar/mold using a wick sticker or a drop of melted wax.
• Use a wick holder (pencil, chopstick, or clip) across the top to keep it straight.
2. Melt the wax
• Use a double boiler method (bowl over hot water).
• Heat until fully melted (around 70–80°C / 160–175°F for soy wax).
3. Add fragrance and color (optional)
• Let the wax cool slightly (around 60–65°C / 140–150°F).
• Stir in fragrance oil (about 6–10% of wax weight).
• Add dye if you want colored candles.
4. Pour the wax
• Slowly pour the wax into your prepared container.
• Leave a little space at the top.
5. Secure the wick
• Make sure the wick is upright and centered as the wax cools.
6. Cool and set
• Let the candle cool at room temperature (avoid moving it).
• If a sinkhole forms around the wick, you can top it up with a little melted wax.
7. Trim the wick
• Once hardened, trim the wick to about 0.5 cm (¼ inch).
8. Curing (for scented candles)
• For best fragrance throw, let candles rest for 2–7 days before burning.
Extra Tips
• Soy wax is eco-friendly and holds fragrance well.
• Beeswax gives a natural honey scent and burns longer.
• Layering colors – pour wax in stages for striped candles.
• Decorations – dried flowers, herbs, or crystals can be added (but only around the sides,
not on the wick for safety).
