Squat Chick: 28” circumference x 8¾” Premier® Basix™

GAUGE: • Polyester stuffing

SKILLS/TECHNIQUES USED IN THIS PATTERN:
• Chain, single, extended single, half double, double and treble crochet stitches.
• Sewing on appliques.
• Working in the round.
• Working in a continuous spiral.

STITCH GUIDE
Extended Single Crochet (esc): Insert hook into designated stitch, yarnover
and pull up a loop, yarnover and pull through one loop on hook, yarnover
and pull through rem 2 loops on hook.

Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around your left finger twice, leaving a 6” tail. Insert
hook under both strands and pull up a loop. Ch 1 and beg working directly
into center of ring. This ring can be tightened later by pulling on the yarn
tail.

Invisible single crochet decrease (inv-dec): Insert hook in front loop only
of each of next 2 sts, yo and draw through both sts, yo and draw through 2
loops on hook (1 st dec’d)

ROUND CHICK
Begin with MC1, larger hook, and Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pm on first st of rnd and move up each rnd.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around – 24 sc.
Rnd 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around – 30 sc.
Rnds 6-7: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 8: [Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around – 36 sc.
Rnds 9-10: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 11: [Sc in next 4 sc, inv-dec] around – 30 sc rem.
Rnd 12: [Sc in next 3 sc, inv-dec] around – 24 sc rem.
Rnd 13: [Sc in next 2 sc, inv-dec] around – 18 sc rem.
Stuff Chick firmly.
Rnd 14: [Sc in next sc, inv-dec] around – 12 sc rem.
Rnd 15: [Inv-dec] around – 6 sc rem.
Fasten off leaving an 8” tail. Pass tail through rem sts, pull to close. Weave
in end.

SQUAT CHICK
Begin with MC2, larger hook and Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pm on first st of rnd and move up each rnd.

Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around – 18 sc.
Rnds 4-5: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 6: [Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around – 24 sc.
Rnds 7-16: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 17: [Sc in next 2 sc, inv-dec] around – 18 sc rem.
Stuff Chick firmly.
Rnd 18: [Sc in next sc, inv-dec] around – 12 sc rem.
Rnd 19: [Inv-dec] around – 6 sc rem.

WINGS (ALL VERSIONS, MAKE 2 EACH)


Begin with MC1, MC2, or MC3, larger hook, and Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Pm on first st of rnd and move up each rnd.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Rnds 3-4: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 5: [Sc in next sc, inv-dec] around – 8 sc rem.
Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

EYES (ALL VERSIONS, MAKE 2 EACH)


Begin with black worsted weight yarn, smaller hook, and Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 hdc in ring.
Fasten off, weave in end invisibly. Embroider eye detail with white worsted
weight yarn.

CONTINUED
BEAK (ALL VERSIONS, MAKE 1 EACH)
Begin with orange worsted weight yarn, smaller hook, and Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, [esc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc] 3 times in ring.
Cut yarn, weave in end invisibly to first esc.

FINISHING
Weave in ends. Sew Beak and Eyes invisibly to each Chick using sewing
needle and thread, using photos as a guide.

TUFT
Cut 5 – 8” strands of orange worsted weight yarn. Holding all strands
together as one, fold in half. Insert hook into top of Chick, from back of
Chick to front of Chick, grab the strands at the fold, and pull partway
through. Pull ends through the loop and pull taut. Trim strands to 1½”
