(SCENE)
(TOWN SQUARE, NOON)

NARRATOR
(walks in, storytelling in an empty stage)
Once upon a rare bright sunny day in the rainy kingdom, ALMEDA,
the farmers and the merchants lived in harmony.
And yes, like the sunny days, harmony between them was indeed
very rare — for most of the kingdom’s lands went to the farmers,
ruled by House Mojica of Highgarden; while most of the kingdom’s
most prosperous trades were credited to the merchants, led by
House Mangumpit of Riverrun.
However, ironically enough, it was also on one such sunny day
when harmony stopped existing.

SCENE BEGINS; background characters set into motion.

NARRATOR
The town square was full of chaos as the Mangumpit family arrived
from their fief to partake in the annual royal discussion in the
Queen’s Palace.

It’s a busy street. On one side, there are merchant stalls. On

the other side, there are farmer’s markets.

Suddenly, all chatter is broken when a group of SOLDIERS come

marching down the street. Surrounded by the SOLDIERS (CHALLIANA,
JAMES, MERRY, LYLA), the MANGUMPIT FAMILY have arrived from their
fief to visit the QUEEN. They walk down the middle of the sunny
street with parasols.

From the sidelines, the MERCHANTS and FARMERS watch as the

MANGUMPIT FAMILY enters the castle.

A few of the FARMERS give the MANGUMPIT FAMILY ugly looks.

DANIELLA
There they go again. Going to the Queen so they can kiss her
shoes and take our lands.

LARA tuts and shakes her head, as the rest of the FARMERS return
to their stalls.

Across the street, one of the MERCHANTS call out the FARMERS. As
they argue, their voices become louder and angrier.

ARON
Whaddya say?! Say that again, I dare you!

DANIELLA
I said your liege lords are bootlickers! Why else would they go
to Her Majesty if not to beg her to give you our lands!?

ZOE
Our lands are farmers’ lands. They’re not to be taken by a bunch
of phonies like you!
The other MERCHANTS gasp, offended. ARON goes in to punch ZOE,
but TREXIE holds him back.

DM steps in from his and his wife’s, ASHLY, stall.

DM
Says the ones who can’t even grow a decent grain of rice! They’re
harder than rocks! Who do you expect to feed those pebbles, your
frogs?! We have a kingdom to feed!

ANSLEY
OI! You still haven’t paid for last month’s due!

GWYNETH
And the month before and before and before that!

TREXIE
What would I even be paying for!

KLARE
Hey! At least we’re growing something.

ASHLY
Oh, but we will grow something too! We shall! Our profits! Our
buildings! Why should we waste all that precious treasure-filled
land on your crops which are thinner than threads?

DM
Exactly! Would it not be best if we built skyscrapers over them
instead?!

He turns to his fellow MERCHANTS, and they all cheer in reply.

KLARE, frantically spluttering

I— WHAT?! What in the world is a skyscraper?!

ARON
Definitely nothing lowborn little rats like you would know about!

ZOE
WHY YOU—

ZOE and ARON get into a tussle and chaos befalls the town square.
(As they argue, they walk off scene to make way for the next
scene.)

Scene 1.1: Soldier’s Moment

Characters:
Soldiers:
James
Juren
Gwen
Kazumi
Challiana
Merry
Lyla

Setting: Garrison barracks; nagsugal kunuhay

(SCENE)
(BARRACKS, NOON)

It’s a calm, quiet noon in the barracks. While the three soldiers
(JUREN, GWEN, and KAZUMI) are on lunch break with nothing to do,
they are playing cards.

GWEN
UNO! Haha!

JUREN
Again?! That’s the fifth time today!

KAZUMI, frustrated
Aurgh! Let’s go for another round!

KAZUMI reveals the ten other cards from under her shirt, adding
to the four cards in her hand.

Right as the three begin a new round of cards, MERRY walks in.
MERRY takes off her helmet and gets ready to unwind for lunch
break.

GWEN
Haha! Come on, Merry! Join us! We just started another game!
MERRY
So you’ll lose to me? No thanks, I’m feeling pretty nice today.

JUREN
How was Riverrun? I heard the boys there don’t swing swords until
they’re twenty.

GWEN (brows wiggling)

If they even know how to swing their swords at all.

JUREN and GWEN laugh and clap hands, sharing an inside joke.
KAZUMI pushes them both, rolls her eyes.

KAZUMI
The girls there are better. Last time I went, I met this girl
named Ros. Amazing conversationalist.

GWEN
Sounds familiar. Could she be your mom, JUREN?

JUREN (messes with GWEN’s cards)

Oh, quiet you.

MERRY, head shaking, sighs and sits in the circle with the three.

MERRY
Nah. There has been some sort of problem with the trade routes
recently. Apparently, they need more areas to store their summer
stocks, and there’s no better place than the Reach.

GWEN (shrugs)
Not our problem, honestly. Riverrun’s just a big collective
scheme of scammers. It’s not our cup to stir.

JUREN
What’s up with that little princeling of theirs anyway? I heard
he’s been going around swinging his sword wherever he pleases.

KAZUMI (groans)
Please stop with the sword-swinging.

MERRY (sighs)
The better question is what isn’t up with that princeling? One
moment he’s off singing bars and the next thing you know, he’s
getting married for the third time that year.

GWEN (scoots closer)

Hey, did you hear? That midget prince isn’t the only one swinging
his sword around?

The other two’s eyes widen.

JUREN
Who? Who?

GWEN
The Mojica heiress. She’s been off prancing lately!

KAZUMI
That’s because she works the fields and helps the farmers! I
can’t believe you of all people would believe that!

MERRY (wins UNO)

I’m surprised she hasn’t been seen with a lover before though.

At that moment, LYLA walks in, prepared for battle.

LYLA
Enough gossiping about sword swallowers and princesses and start
strapping your swords! MOVE MOVE MOVE! THERE’S A RIOT IN THE
SQUARE!

The SOLDIERS frantically begin to move around and prepare to stop

the riot.

House members :

3. Glory

Steward (Soldier)
Juren

Setting: Throne Room (Early Morning)

As the murmur of nobility echo across the cold gilded walls,

quiet but sharp enough to unsettle. Like a group of snakes
waiting in ambush, for the perfect chance, the perfect
opportunity. And yet coiled and controlled due to what lies at
the far end, there the Queen sat upon her throne - listening,
watching.

And just as suddenly the room's quiet is broken when the door is
opened by a steward who loudly announces.

Steward Juren (Soldier)

"Announcing Lord Prince, Lord Paramount of the Trident, Lord of
Riverrun. And his house!"

Immediately all eyes turn towards the door as Prince, Nor, and
Cajes enter the room.
Steward Juren (Soldier)
"And announcing Lord Gabrielle, Lord Paramount of the Reach,
Warden of the South, High Marshal of the Reach, Defender of
Marches, and the Lord of Highgarden. And his house!"

The gossip within the room suddenly returned in full force, like
a tide crashing into a cliff.

Queen Cherry Ann

"Silence!"

The room quiets down once more.

Queen Cherry Ann

"Speak, what do you have to say?"

Lord Prince walks forward and kneels in front of the Queen.

Lord Prince
"Your Majesty! I'm deeply honored to be in your glorious
presence, for it is like the sun shining brightly upon these
lands! Men all across the worl..."

Queen Cherry Ann

(Cuts of Prince)
"Enough. Just get to the point."

Prince looks up, startled, before he quickly stammers a reply.

Lord Prince
"Ahh... Well your Majesty, you must stand up for me! My men were
unjustly beaten under the orders of Lord Gabrielle! It is utterly
uncalled for!"

From the side, Lord Gabrielle approaches and kneels as well in

front of the Queen, before retorting a reply to the statement by
the Lord Paramount of the Trident.

Lord Gabrielle
"Unjust? Truelly, as expected of a son of the great noble line of
Mangumpit. So quick to place the blame upon others."

Lord Gabrielle
"Your Majesty, my people have suffered severely because of the
men under Lord Prince. They have taken advantage of my people and
have repeatedly tried to steal their lands. And yet HE has the
gall to blame ME!"

Lord Gabrielle huffs, as he takes deep breaths to calm himself

down, and then he speaks up once more.

Lord Gabrielle
"I'm sorry for the outburst you Majesty, It's just tha..."

Lord Prince
(Cuts off Gab angrily)
"That he is spitting lies, he says that my men have tried to
steal their lands. HAH! My men have given extremely generous
conditions to your people. And you dare claim they tried to steal
it."

Lord Prince
"Your Majesty! you must side with me! I pay the kingdom 20% of
the Total Annual Tax Budget! I would never hurt the kingdom's
interest!"

Prince pleads to the Queen, hoping that she may favor him in this
debacle.

Queen Cherry Ann

(Looking at the two of them)
"I have understood where your concerns lie. I have a proposal for
the both you. I will, through the power that have been given unto
me! That your heirs of the house shall be wed, and your Houses be
united in blood."

Queen Cherry Ann

(Turns toward the Ladies of each House)
"Lady Nor, Lady Kaye, may I ask for both of your opinions in
regards to this matter? As the heirs in question were birthed
from the two of you were they not?"

Lady Nor
"I have no opinions on this your Majesty, as my son is already of
age."

Lady Kaye
"I as well your Majesty, for my daughter Glory has long been of
age. And thanks to your Majesty for blessing this marriage."
Queen Cherry Ann
(Looking back again towards the two Lord Paramounts)
"This matter is therefore resolved. Do you two have any
discontent with this decision?"

Both Prince and Gab at the same time

"No your Majesty."

Queen Cherry Ann

"I shall announce this decision myself at the courtyard after
this mourning court session is over. The two of you and your
houses may leave."

With that Lord Prince and Lord Gabrielle along with their Houses
leave the room. As the murmur of nobles pick up once more, this
time more jovial due to the wonderful play that have just
observed.

Scene 5: Reaction of the People
Characters:
Queen
Townspeople
Soldier

Setting:
Castle Courtyard

The crowd murmurs, some even shouting.

SOLDIER
Silence for Her Majesty, the Queen!

The murmurs quieten as the Queen steps forward.

QUEEN
My beloved subjects, I have heard your voices and seen your
anger. You fight out of fear to lose your land, your trade, and
your livelihoods. But heed well: Trade cannot thrive without
harvest, nor can harvest thrive without trade. You are not
enemies. You are halves of the same whole.

The crowd chatters, and some cross their arms in skepticism.

QUEEN
If we are to endure as one kingdom, we must stand together. So I
have decided that the heir of House Mangumpit, ruler of the
merchants… and the heir of House Mojica, the ruler of the
farmers… shall be wed.

The crowd displays a range of reactions, including scoffs, gasps,

and cheers.

FARMER IN CROWD
A wedding? How will that solve our hunger?

MERCHANT IN CROWD
And trade? Our businesses?
The people clamor in agreement.

QUEEN
Their union will bind your futures. The lands will be shared
equally, and the profits of trade and the harvest will be divided
fairly. No more taking and hoarding—only prosperity as one.

The two heirs step forward and give the crowd a respectful bow.

QUEEN
From this day forth, there shall be no “our” and “them.” Only one
kingdom, people, and future.

The crowd shares looks of hesitation, then begins to clap slowly.

The applause eventually grows, and cheers emerge.

Scene 6: Wedding
Characters:
Queen
Mojica Heir
Mangumpit Heir
Townspeople

Setting:
Grand hall (?)

QUEEN
We gather here not merely for a wedding, but for a promise. A
promise that nothing shall stand between the field and the
market. The plow and coin shall serve one another.

The crowd glances at each other with gentle smiles. The Bride and
Groom face each other.

QUEEN
Do you,___ Mangumpit, heir of House Mangumpit, ruler of
merchants, take Glory Mojica, heir of House Mojica, ruler of
farmers, to stand beside you in duty, honor, and in unity for
this kingdom?

MANGUMPIT HEIR
I do.

QUEEN
Do you, Glory Mojica, heir of House Mojica, ruler of farmers,
take ____ Mangumpit, heir of House Mangumpit, ruler of merchants,
to stand beside you in duty, honor, and in unity for this
kingdom?

GLORY
I do.

The bride and groom exchange rings.

QUEEN
By my crown and by the will of the people, I pronounce you bound
in marriage and in peace.

Trumpets blare and the crowd roars.

(Juren)
Scene 7: Effects (Aftermath of the Marriage)
Characters:
Mangumpit heir
Mojica heiress
Queen
Farmers
Merchants
Soldiers
Townspeople
Setting: Town Square (Six months later)

The once-bustling marketplace now hums with an easy, warm

energy. Merchants and farmers trade side by side without
raised voices or suspicious glances. Stalls are filled with
both goods from the fields and products from the cities.

A FARMER hands a basket of fresh vegetables to a MERCHANT,

who passes over a pouch of coins without haggling.

MERCHANT
Good harvest this season. We’ll sell these at the capital
for double.

FARMER
And half of that profit comes back here. Fair deal.

They shake hands.

Nearby, the QUEEN walks among her subjects, flanked by

SOLDIERS. She pauses, watching the mingling groups.

QUEEN (softly, to herself)

So it can be done.

Trumpets sound in the distance. The MANGUMPIT HEIR and

MOJICA HEIRESS ride in together on horseback, formally
dressed, waving at the crowd.

The townspeople cheer, though some notice that the smiles on

the heirs’ faces never quite reach their eyes.

A YOUNG GIRL runs up with a garland of flowers, offering it

to GLORY.
YOUNG GIRL
For you, my lady. Thank you for making us friends again.

GLORY (kneels, placing the garland on her head)

It is my duty.

The Mangumpit Heir dismounts and hands a sealed trade

agreement to a group of MERCHANTS and FARMERS.

MANGUMPIT HEIR
The storage houses are now jointly owned. The next
shipment’s profits will be shared equally.

Applause follows.

The QUEEN steps forward, raising her voice.

QUEEN
This is the kingdom we have built together where no hand
works alone, and no mouth goes hungry.

The crowd erupts in cheers.

As the people celebrate, GLORY and JOHN exchange a quiet

glance.

GLORY (low voice)

The people are happy. That is enough.

MANGUMPIT HEIR (nods)

We’ve done our duty.

They turn back to the crowd, standing side by side but not
touching.

The scene fades with the joyous noise of the people, while
the heirs’ smiles remain polite and distant, bound by peace,
not love.
