English for Specific Purposes (ESP):
Contemporary Domains and Impacts
1. What is English for Specific Purposes (ESP)?
Definition:
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) refers to teaching and learning English in a way that
meets the needs of specific academic, professional, or occupational fields. Unlike General
English (GE), ESP is tailored to real-world goals in particular contexts. It focuses on what
learners need to do in English in their work or studies.
Sub-fields of ESP:
- English for Academic Purposes (EAP): Includes English skills for understanding lectures,
writing research papers, giving presentations, and reading academic texts. It helps students
succeed in universities and colleges.
- English for Occupational Purposes (EOP): Designed for professionals such as doctors,
engineers, pilots, lawyers, and hotel managers. The focus is on communication skills they
need at work (e.g., writing patient reports, giving technical briefings, legal argumentation,
etc.).
- English for Vocational Purposes: For learners in hands-on or trade-based jobs like
hospitality workers, electricians, plumbers, factory workers. The aim is to help them
understand instructions, safety guidelines, and interact with clients or colleagues in English.
Key Features:
- Needs-based curriculum: ESP courses begin with a needs analysis—understanding what
the learners already know, what they need to learn, and how they will use English in the
future.
- Authentic materials: Students learn through real-world content such as emails, medical
charts, business reports, or court transcripts—not just textbook English.
- Goal-oriented: The learning is focused on clear goals, like improving writing for academic
papers, giving a professional presentation, or understanding technical manuals.
Pakistani Example:
- Medical students in Lahore study English to write case reports and understand medical
journals.
- Law students in Islamabad learn legal vocabulary and court procedures in English.
- Business students in Karachi need English to write emails, reports, and give presentations
during internships.
