Chapter1

INTRODUCTION

On-the-Job Training(OJT) plays a pivotal role in the academic formation of

engineering students, serving as a bridge between theoretical knowledge acquired

in the classroom and its practical implementation in real-world settings. It provides

students with the opportunity to apply learned concepts in a professional

environment, thereby enhancing their technical abilities and preparing them for

the demands of the industry. The primary aim of the internship is to expose

students to actual field operations, strengthen their competencies, and foster

readiness for future professional responsibilities. In addition to technical

development,OJT also cultivates essential soft skills, contributing to a well-rounded

understanding of the engineering discipline.

The internship at DPWH Cam. Sur 5th DEO offered a valuable immersion into

the practices of engineering, architecture, and construction. While the firm is

primarily focused on architectural design and building execution, the training

remained relevant to the engineering curriculum. Interns were engaged in a

variety of tasks, including site evaluations, basic structural assessments, project

coordination, and collaborative work with professionals from different disciplines.

This exposure to cross-functional workflows enriched the interns’ appreciation of

the interconnected nature of construction-related professions.

Entering the internship brought a mix of anticipation and uncertainty,as

participants faced the challenge of translating academic learning into actual

practice. Despite limited prior experience, the theoretical foundation provided by

EffectivityDate:June2022 Rev.1 Page8of79

academic coursework, coupled with a strong eagerness to learn, allowed interns to

navigate the professional setting effectively. In the end, the OJT experience proved

to be more than a curricular requirement—it became a

EffectivityDate:June2022 Rev.1 Page9of79

Significant a venue for professional development,self-evaluation,and the nurturing

of discipline, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning, all of which are

essential attributes in the engineering profession.

BACKGROUND

The development of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) into its present

structure underwent a long process of evolution spanning a century of colorful and significant

events in laying the groundwork for the physical foundation of the country.

The Department is considered as old as the Philippine government, its existence dates back to

about four (4) centuries at the time of the Spanish colonial era. It emerged from its embryonic

form in 1565 when the first settlement roads were constructed by forced labor. Fortresses then

were connected by improved trails as supply lines and means of communications. As Spain

was in its expansion program in the islands, it resorted to a policy of attraction by way of public

works construction. In order to pursue their objective, the King of Spain designated the

Spanish Governor General in the country as Chief of Public Works assisted by “Junta

Consultiva” through a Royal Degree in 1867.

It was in 1868 when the Bureau of Public Works and Highways (Obras Publicas) and Bureau

of Communications and Transportation (Communicationes y Meteologia) were organized

under a civil engineer known as “Director General”.

Since then, the Department underwent various stages of development and evolution that

largely depended upon the change in government shift of administration policies, and

reorganization in its structure and responsibilities to suit the demands of times.

Finally after a long process of evolution by virtue of Executive Order No. 124, dated January

30, 1987, the agency is now known as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)

EffectivityDate:June2022 Rev.1 Page10of79

with five (5) bureaus, six (6) services, sixteen (16 regional offices, twenty-four (24) project

management offices sixteen (16) regional equipment services and one-hundred eighteen (118)

district engineering offices.

VISION

By 2030, DPWH is an effective and efficient government agency, improving the life of

every Filipino through quality infrastructure.

MISSION

To provide and manage quality infrastructure facilities and services responsive to the

needs of the Filipino people in the pursuit of national development objectives.

ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING PROGRAM

Company Internship Placement Details

My On-the-Job Training was conducted at DPWH Cam. Sur 5th DEO, a

government company engaged in high way works, project construction, and

planning services. The internship program is designed to expose student-trainees

to real-world practices and workflows within the architectural and construction

industry. The program provides hands-on experience in various project stages from

initial design to site implementation under the guidance of licensed professionals.

An orientation was conducted on the first day of my internship at the

company’s main office. During the orientation, i were introduced to the company’s

mission, vision, and standard operating procedures. Safety guidelines, work ethics,

and expected outputs were also discussed.

I assigned to the Quality Assurance Section, where I primarily involved in

materials testing such as monitoring construction progress and assisting in on-site

coordination. I also supported occasional office work, including organizing data

using Microsoft Excel and documentation. My site activities supervised by Engr.

Joanna T. Manaog, who provided hands-on mentor ship and task guidance.

My working hours from 8:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday to Friday,with a one-hour

lunch break. Most of our tasks conducted in office and site, where we assisted in

monitoring construction activities, coordinating with workers, and ensuring that

work aligned with the

EffectivityDate:June2022 Rev.1 Page14of79

Design plans.I also given opportunities to participate in fieldwork, helping with site

measurements, documentation, and the use of basic construction tools.

DAILY ROUTINARY ACTIVITIES

I began my daily routine at 8:00 AM with a morning briefing led by the site

supervisor to discuss the day’s tasks and assignments. After the briefing, I checked

and recorded the material to ensure everything was in order. Throughout the day,

I observed the construction materials testing and assisted in site monitoring the

cement mix ratio whenever mixing took place through slump test. I also helped

document the site activities through photos and written notes. Part of my routine

included reminding workers of their break times—snack at 10:00 AM, lunch at

12:00 noon, and another snack at 3:00 PM.

STUDENT NAME: ERIC B. AMOROSO

I. Roles,Tasks,and Projects

a.My role as an On-the-Job Trainee in Civil Engineering involved a

range of responsibilities aimed at supporting on-site operations

and quality assurance. I was tasked with verifying construction

materials. A key duty was to monitor the cement-to-mix ratio

during pouring operations, thereby upholding the structural

integrity of the concrete. I also maintained a comprehensive

record of all daily activities. To bridge the gap between

academic theory and practical application, I frequently

engaged with the construction crew to gain a deeper

understanding of

their methods and the principles guiding their work.

b.The primary objective of my OJT experience is to observe and

analyze the practical application of civil engineering concepts

in ongoing highway construction projects. I focus on monitoring

key processes such as concrete pouring and material

inspections. Although my role has been largely observational,it

engineering principles, including those related to material

science, structural design, and safety standards. For instance, I

ensured the correct cement mix ratios and assessed the

stability of form work. These hands-on tasks reinforced my

understanding of crucial concepts such as load distribution and

material properties in a practical context.

d.Although I did not directly utilize Auto CAD during my internship,I

possess a fundamental understanding of the software and its

application in civil engineering. My primary contribution with

digital tools was using Microsoft Excel to encode cost

estimates, which was instrumental in organizing and monitoring

the financial aspects of various projects.Furthermore, through

direct observation on-site, I gained practical insight into the

function and operational significance of various heavy

machinery, such as backhoes, porta lifts, and concrete mixers,

which are essential to the execution of

construction tasks.
e.During my OJT,I worked closely with Engineers,laborers,co-OJTs,

and apprentices. Collaborating with fellow trainees allowed us

to share knowledge and assist each other, enhancing our

understanding of construction processes. This experience

force to actively applying them on-site. This experience

EffectivityDate:June2022 Rev.1 Page42of79

confirmed that accurate interpretation is fundamental to

maintaining a project's timeline and integrity. I also gained

practical experience by monitoring concrete mix ratios to

ensure adherence to specified standards. These combined tasks

were invaluable for understanding how technical

documentation and quality control are foundational to project

success.

b. One skill I continually emphasized through out my internship is the

importance of observation.By closely monitoring materials and

activities

on-site, I learned to estimate the quantities of cement, sand,

and aggregates required for various elements like beams, tie

beams, columns, and slabs. Understanding the material

requirements and being able to adjust them based on real-time

observations helped me develop

a strong sense of how construction works beyond the drawing

board.
c.A significant part of my role involved monitoring cement

proportions to ensure they met all required quality

specifications. This included performing daily checks on

materials and verifying the accuracy of initial material

estimations. I actively helped identify discrepancies in material

proportions and contributed to making necessary

adjustments,ensuring

the mixture adhered to all safety and performance standards.

d.The internship provided a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap

between academic theory and practical application. I was able

to apply fundamental engineering principles by monitoring

precise material proportions, interpreting technical plans, and

performing on-site quality assurance. This experience was

crucial for reinforcing my understanding of how classroom

learning is directly translated into tangible engineering

work.
III. Challenges and Solutions

a.Like any real-world experience, my internship came with

challenges. I encountered technical issues, such as incorrect

stirrup spacing in beams and columns, and frequent equipment

breakdowns that caused delays. Managing material inventory

and cement mix ratios was also difficult during peaks it e

activity.Miscommunication between staff occasionally

led to confusion. However, with the help of our supervising

engineers and

apprentice, I addressed issues early through team work and clear

communication.

b. I worked closely with the site engineer to implement necessary

corrections. Equipment issues were managed through regular

maintenance and backup plans to avoid delays. To improve

organization, I set a consistent inventory-checking routine and

coordinated with workers to monitor material use and cement

ratios. The fore man resolved conflicts through clear

communication and task clarification. With guidance from our

supervising engineers ,I learned from these challenges and

improved my on-site performance.

c.The challenges I faced taught me to stay calm under pressure

and highlighted the value of teamwork, communication, and

attention to detail in solving site issues. These experiences

EffectivityDate:June2022 Rev.1 Page44of79

gave me practical insights into real construction

problems, equipping me with knowledge beyond the

classroom.
IV. Insights and Personal Reflection

a.This internship helped me grow both professionally and

personally. With support from the team and our supervising

architect, I learned to handle pressure, became more

responsible, and strengthened my work ethic. Experiencing

real construction work boosted my confidence and

deepened my understanding of applied engineering.
