WEEK 4
Track 01
A: I really enjoyed that little place we went to last weekend - there was a really good choice of meat and
fish, wasn't there?
B: Did you really think so? I wish I could say the same, but actually, I thought it was pretty limited. There
were far too many fish dishes on the menu and I can't stand seafood. There just wasn't enough meat.
A: Oh, come on Jo! We really enjoyed the steak we had, and you said that the beef the people on the
other table were eating looked delicious too.
B: Well, I won't be going back. It was much too expensive.
A: Well, I thought it was pretty reasonable. In fact I couldn't believe it when the bill arrived. £40,
including a tip. That's only £20 per person. You can't get steak for less than £15 anywhere in town.

Track 02
David: Hi, Leila! Where are you? We need to leave for the party soon.
Leila: I'm on my way home - I'm still waiting for the bus. I was going to get a taxi back but I've just
checked my phone and there's a bus due in about 15 minutes - 7.50 pm to be exact. And it seems to be
running on time. It left the railway station a couple of minutes ago, so it's not too far away.
David: Do you want me to pick you up? I've got the car, so it's no problem. Where's the bus stop exactly?
Leila: It's the one on Blythe Road.
David: Blythe Road? I'm just checking it on my phone. Is that B-L-Y-T-H?
Leila: There's an e at the end of Blythe.
David: Got it. OK, I won't be long.
Leila: Actually, David – no need to pick me up. The traffic lights have just changed and I can see the bus
coming now. I’d better go – I’ll see you at home in a few minutes.

Track 03
Darren: Hi there, Alicia! How was your weekend? You were on a sailing course down at the harbour,
weren't you?
Alicia: That's right - I really enjoyed breathing in all that fresh sea air. It was only two days but the time
flew by! The instructor began by teaching us safety rules, which was necessary, but not very exciting.
But then on the first morning we learnt how to open the sails and I even learnt how to turn the boat.
The water wasn't as calm as it looked, I can tell you - I lost my balance a few times!
Darren: Sounds like you had a lot of fun. I'd love to learn to sail.

Alicia: Well, there are plenty of courses and I think they run them once a month - so just let me check
the website here. OK, so this was my course here - see - 4th and 5th of August. Now you could sign up
for the next one, at the beginning of September. And it looks like there are still some spaces available.
Darren: So, the next one starts on 1st of September? I think I could do that.
Alicia: Well, let me give you the name of the course leader so that you can give him a call. He's a really
experienced sailor ... OK, it's Jon Galloway.
Darren: Is that the usual spelling of John?
Alicia: No, there's no 'H' - he's just J-O-N.
Darren: OK, got you. And did you say his surname's Galloway? Can you spell that for me?
Alicia: Yes - Galloway - that's G-A-double L-O-W-A-Y. And I've got his number too. Why don't you give
him a ring?

Track 04
Jon: So, how's your very first week at university going, Rita? It's Orientation Week for all you new
students, isn't it?
Rita: Yes, that's right - Orientation Week. Yes, it's great fun - there are so many different events going
on to help us make friends and find our way around the university. And to get around the city, come to
that! But you'll remember all that, Jon. You were a new student once!
Jon: That's true. I remember I went on a walking tour of the city on my first day. And I think some
students did a bus tour.
Rita: Well, I did a bike tour - I was sent an email about it and I decided to sign up. There were only eight
places and there were seven other names on the list already, so I got the very last place.
Jon: I didn't know you had a bike.
Rita: I don't have a bike but that didn't matter. We all hired them - from a little cycle hire shop on
Barkway Street. You probably know the place.
Jon: Barclay Street? Do you mean the 'Barclay Street' on campus?
Rita: No, it's Barkway Street - B-A-R-K-W-A-Y. Number 22 Barkway Street, to be exact. It was great - we
could choose a traditional bike or an electric one.
Jon: Sol take it you went electric!
Rita: Yes, of course I did! Well, think about it - why ride a traditional bike when you can get around the
city much faster on an electric one! And because there was a group of us, it wasn't too expensive. In fact
the cycle hire was only a $120 for the whole group. So the cost was only $15 per person and that was
for three whole hours!
Jon: Did you say $50?

WEEK 4 FB: IELTS LISA
LISTENING SCRIPTS - FOUNDATION
Rita: No, $15. So I thought it was really quite cheap. And I didn't have to bring along a helmet to wear
either. That was included - and we also got a lock, so it was easy to park our bikes safely when we
wanted to stop and take a break!
Jon: Sounds good. Have you got the website address of the place you got your bike from? I quite like the
idea of doing a bike tour.
Rita: Yes - it's a really easy one to remember. It's tradelectric.com
Jon: Can you say that again?
Rita: tradelectric – T-R-A-D-E-L-E-C-T-R-I-C all one word dot com
Jon: Thanks, Rita
Rita: No problem. Hey, maybe we can do a bike tour together. I’d love to cycle as far as the habour next
time.
Jon: Great! That’s a date then!

Track 07
Bridget: Hello, Eddie? It's Bridget.
Eddie: Oh hi, Bridget.
B: Listen, Eddie, are you still free to do an article for the college magazine?
E: Sure, is there anything in particular you'd like me to write about?
B: Well, the next issue is about people's lives, you know, people who have done something interesting
or exciting. Anyway, I've got someone lined up, and I was wondering if you could interview them and
then write the article.
E: All right, that's fine with me.
B: Great. Have you got a pen?
E: Yes.
B: OK, take this down. His name is Tom Coogan.
E: Tom...?
B: Coogan. That's C-O-O-G-A-N. Got that? E: Sure, and what does he do?
B: He's a travel writer.
E: I don't think I've heard of him. What else can you tell me about him? How old is he? What's he written?
That sort of thing.
B: OK, he's 42 years old, er, and he's written ten or twelve books. Let me just check that. Uh huh, twelve
books, including his latest. Oh, and he also presents a travel programme on TV.
E: All right.
B: Now, his latest book is about a journey he made across the Gobi desert on horseback. It took him six
months, apparently. Anyway, I think he'd like to talk about that, so make sure you ask lots of questions.
E: Fine, I'd better look at a copy. What's it called?

11
WEEK 4 FB: IELTS LISA
LISTENING SCRIPTS - FOUNDATION
B: It's called Has Anyone Seen My Horse? I've got a copy here which I can lend you.
E: OK, and why does he want to talk about that book in particular? B: It's just won him an award.
E: Really? What kind?
B: Travel Book of the Year.
E: Oh, wow, that's pretty impressive.
B: Exactly, so like I say, ask lots of questions about it. Now, I've arranged for you to meet him on 21st
October. That's two weeks on Friday, is that OK?
E: It should be. Have you got a time for that?
B: Not yet, he wants you to call him beforehand to arrange that. I'll give you his contact number. It's
0722, no, hang on, it's 0772 9214490.
E: 0772 9214490. And where am I supposed to meet him?
B: He's suggested his place, which is good as it's not far from the college. It's 138 Lonsdale Avenue,
Summertown. Lonsdale is L-O-N-S-D-A-L-E.
E: Yeah, I think I know where Lonsdale Avenue is. You did say 138, didn't you?
B: Right. Oh, and I suggest that you take a look at his website as well. It's got loads of information, so
you might want to ask him about some of his other trips. It's at www.tomcooganbooks.com.
E: All right. Thanks for that. I'll let you know how I get on.
B: Great. Thanks, Eddie. Good luck.

Track 08
Narrator: You will hear a woman phoning a hospital to ask about a job vacancy advertised in the local
newspaper.
Woman 1: Good morning. Englefield Hospital Human Resources Department. My name's Dawn. How
can I help you?
Woman 2: Hello, I'm calling about the job advertised in yesterday's Evening News.
Woman 1: Um, we have several jobs advertised at the moment. Which one are you calling about?
Woman 2: X-ray Department Receptionist.
Woman 1: Oh yes, I remember that vacancy. Right, can I just take some details first? Starting with your
name, please?
Woman 2: Jill Adderstone.
Woman 1: OK, is that Jill with a J?
Woman 2: Yes, it is.
Woman 1: And how do you spell your surname, please? Woman 2: It's A-double D-E-R-S-T-O-N-E.

Woman 1: OK. Thank you. And can I take your address, please?
Woman 2: Sure. It's number 1-4-7, Bonham Street.
Woman 1: Is that B-O-N-H-A-M?
Woman 2: That's correct, and the city is Leicester. Woman 1: And can I take your postcode too, please?
Woman 2: Of course. It's LE2 6HV.
Woman 1: Right. And just one more thing for the computer-can I take your phone number, please?
Woman 2: I've just moved there, and I only have a mobile at the moment. Is that OK?
Woman 1: That's no problem at all.
Woman 2: Right, it's ... let me think, I keep forgetting it ... OK, it's 07488 269010.
Woman 1: Can I ask, do you have any previous experience of reception work?
Woman 2: Yes, I do. I've been a receptionist at the Imperial Hotel for the last 13 years, but it's closing
down next month, unfortunately.
Woman 1: I see. I'm sorry to hear that. There's just one more question I need to ask you. When would
you be available to start?
Woman 2: Um, just a moment while I look at my diary. OK... I could start from Monday the 11th of June.
Woman 1: That sounds fine. Well, we're interviewing Wednesday and Thursday next week. Is there any
particular time you can't manage then?
Woman 2: Um, well, I can't do Wednesday, I'm afraid, as I'll be at work, but Thursday's one of my days
off, so any time then would be OK.
Woman 1: 10.30 a.m.?
Woman 2: That's fine.
Woman 1: And you know where we are?
Woman 2: Yes, I do. The address is in the advertisement ... but do you mind if I ask a couple of questions
about the job? I'll have to travel quite a long way, and I want to be sure it's the kind of job I'm looking
for. Woman 1: OK, that sounds reasonable. What do you want to know?

Track 09
Hello everyone. Sorry to interrupt your class. I just want to make a quick announcement about our
summer timetable. Shimmer Dance School will be offering new classes this spring due to strong
demand. Angela Stevenson will be back this term, running ballet class. This class for an hour and a half,
so it will continue until 8 o’clock. This means we have to charge higher fees, but only slightly higher:
from £8.50 (eight pounds fifty) to £10.50. That’s only £2.00 for extra half hour! Next, Janine Davis will
still be teaching the tango classes. Instead of being on Mondays, these classes will be on Wednesday
nights from 7 o’clock to 8 o’clock. The fee will still be £7.501 for the hour. Last but not least, Andrew is
taking over the tap class. This class for early risers as it starts at 8.30 on Saturday morning and finishes
at 10. We expect this class to be very popular as tap class is a great way to get fit while learning new
dancing skills. This will cost £11.00. All the other classes remain the same as the writer timetable. We
hope there’s something for all of you at Shimmers!
