Third Conditional - Reinforcement Project & Review Activities

Project: 'What If... Rewriting the Past'

Target group: Students who need extra reinforcement of the third conditional.
Estimated time: 60-90 minutes

Stage 1 - Explore real examples (15-20 min)

Activity: 'Regret Stories'
Show short past situations (real or fictional) and ask students to write third conditional sentences:
Example:
- Tom didn't study -> If Tom had studied, he wouldn't have failed.
- Clara missed her flight -> If she had checked the time, she wouldn't have missed her flight.

Stage 2 - Write your own alternate past (20-25 min)

Activity: 'My Sliding Doors Moment'
Students write a short real or fictional story with 4-6 sentences, then write 3 third conditional sentences about
how the story could have changed.

Stage 3 - Speaking & feedback (15-20 min)

Activity: 'Present your alternate timeline'
Students share their story in pairs or groups. They ask each other questions using the third conditional.
Optional: Record presentations as short video reflections.

Games and Activities for Students Who Just Need Review

These can be used in stations or for groups working independently (60-90 minutes total).

1. Card Game: 'Guess the Regret'

Use cards with short situations (e.g. "She lost her phone.") and students guess the third conditional sentence.

2. 'Would You Have...?' Speed Round (10 min)

One student asks, another answers, using third conditional questions like:
- If you had studied something else, what would it have been?
- If you had taken the other job, what would have changed?
