INTRODUCTION:
According to the 1992 Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA) ruling,
health care agencies must provide
employees with the equipment and supplies
necessary to minimize or prevent exposure to
infectious material. This personal protective
equipment (PPE) includes gloves, gowns,
masks, and protective eye wear.

1.Gloves:
3. Explain about 5 Gloves, not a substitute for good hand Lecture
gloves min cum What are the

discussion uses of gloves
appropriately according to agency policy.
Then hands are thoroughly decontaminated
with meticulous hand hygiene.
 When nursing care activities do not
involve the possibility of soiling the
hands with body fluids, gloves are not
necessary. Activities such as turning a
patient, feeding a patient, taking vital
signs, and changing IV fluid bags do not
require the use of gloves as long as the
potential contact with body fluids is not
present.
 However, when there is a possibility of
soiling the hands with body fluids,
gloves must be worn.
 Each patient interaction requires a
clean pair of gloves. Some care
activities for an individual patient may
necessitate changing gloves more than
once.
 Gloves should always be changed prior
to moving from a contaminated task to
a clean one.
 Wearing gloves does not eliminate the
need for proper hand hygiene. In reality,
the warmth and moisture inside gloves
create an ideal environment for bacteria
to multiply, making it even more
important to perform good hand
hygiene before and after using gloves.
 Research also indicates that gloving
does not guarantee complete protection
from infectious organisms.
 Double gloving (putting on two gloves
on one hand) is recommended if the
health care worker is involved in a
procedure during which exposure to
blood or body fluids is expected, such
as in an OR setting.

2.Gowns:
4.
Explain about 5 Gowns are usually worn to prevent soiling of
use of gowns min the health care worker's clothing by the Lecture What are the
method uses of wearing
patient's blood and body fluids. gowns
 They provide barrier protection and are
donned immediately before entering the
patient's room.
 Individual gown technique is
recommended. This technique involves
wearing a gown only one time and then
discarding it appropriately according to
agency policy.
 A waterproof or impervious gown is
used if there is an increased likelihood
of contact with the patient's blood or
body fluids.
 If a gown becomes heavily soiled or
moistened with blood or body fluids
when caring for a patient, remove it,
perform thorough hand hygiene, and
put on a clean gown.
3.Masks:
5. Masks help prevent the wearer from inhaling
Discuss about 5 Lecture What are the
masks and min large-particle aerosols, which usually travel method benefits of
eye protectors short distances (about 3 feet), and small- masks and eye
protectors
particle droplet nuclei, which can remain
suspended in the air and travel longer
distances.
 They also protect the patient from the
respiratory secretions of the health care
worker.
 Masks discourage the wearer from
touching the eyes, nose, and mouth,
thus limiting contact of organisms with
mucous membrane.
 A mask is worn only once and never
lowered around the neck and then
brought back over the mouth and nose
for reuse.
 How long one can wear one mask while
caring for one patient is the subject of
debate. Regardless of the time worn, a
mask must be changed before it
becomes damp from the wearer's
exhalations.
 According to CDC guidelines, either a
high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)
filter respirator or N95 respirator
certified by NIOSH must be worn when
entering the room of a patient with
known or suspected tuberculosis,
SARS, or influenza.
4.Protective Eyewear:
Protective eyewear, such as goggles or a
face shield, must be available whenever there
is a risk of contaminating the mucous
membranes of the eyes. For example,
suctioning a tracheostomy or assisting with
an invasive procedure that may result in
splattering of blood or other body fluids
requires protection for the caregiver. Plain
glasses are unacceptable because side
shields are required.

CARE PERSONNEL:
 Perform hand hygiene.
 Provide instruction about precautions to
patient, family members, and visitors.
 Put on gown, mask, protective
eyewear, and gloves based on the type
of exposure anticipated and category of
isolation precautions.
a. Put on the gown, with the opening in the
back. Tie gown securely at neck and waist
b. Put on the mask or respirator over your
nose, mouth, and chin Secure ties or elastic
bands at the middle of the head and neck. If
respirator is used, perform a fit check. Inhale;
the respirator should collapse. Exhale; air
should not leak out
c. Put on goggles. Place over eyes and
adjust to fit. Alternately, a face shield could
be used to take the place of the mask and
goggle.
d. Put on clean disposable gloves. Extend
gloves to cover the cuffs of the gown
HOW TO REMOVE PPE :
7. Discuss how 1) Remove PPE: Except for respirator,
to remove 10 Discussion How to remove
PPE min remove PPE at the door way or in an method PPE
anteroom. Remove respirator after leaving
the patient's room and closing the door.
a) If impervious gown has been tied in
front of the body at the waistline, untie
waist strings before removing gloves.
b)Grasp the outside of one glove with the
opposite gloved hand and peel off, turning the
glove inside out as you pull it off. Hold the
removed glove in the remaining gloved hand.
C) Slide fingers of ungloved hand under
the remaining glove at the wrist, taking care
not to touch the outer surface of the glove
d) Peel off the glove over the first glove,
containing the one glove inside the other.
Discard in appropriate container.
e). To remove the goggles or face shield:
Handle by the head band or earpieces
(Figure 9). Lift away from the face. Place in
designated receptacle for reprocessing or in
an appropriate waste container
f) To remove gown: Unfasten ties, if at the
neck and back. Allow the gown to fall
away from shoulders.
 Touching only the inside of the
gown, pull away from the torso.
Keeping hands on the inner surface
of the gown, pull gown from arms.
Turn gown inside out. Fold or roll
into a bundle and discard.
g) To remove mask or respirator: Grasp
the neck ties or elastic, then top ties or elastic
and remove. Take care to avoid touching
front of mask or respirator. Discard in waste
container. If using a respirator, save for future
use in the designated area.
 Perform hand hygiene immediately
after removing all PPE.

SUMMARY:
Till now I have discussed regarding personal
protective equipment, purposes, how to use
masks, gloves, gowns,eye protectors and
how to remove them after use.
CONCLUSION :
Personal protective equipments are those
equipments that are used in health care
setting to avoid infections among health care
workers to avoid cross infection.
