Tutorial 9

The document contains a tutorial for PHY 101 focused on mechanics, featuring four problems related to angular motion and moment of inertia. It includes calculations for angular speed of a top, moment of inertia for a circular plate with a hole, acceleration of masses on a pulley system, and angular velocity of a swinging meterstick. Each problem requires applying principles of physics such as conservation of energy and rotational dynamics.

1. The top in the Figure below has a moment of inertia of 4.0024 kg.m2 and is initially at
rest. It is free to rotate about the stationary axis AA . A string, wrapped around a peg
along the axis of the top, is pulled in such a manner as to maintain a constant tension of 2

5.57 N. If the string does not slip while it is unwound from the peg, what is the angular
speed of the top after 80.0 cm of string has been pulled off the peg?

2. A hole of radius r has been drilled in a circular, flat plate of radius R (see the figure below).
The center of the hole is at a distance d from the center of the circle. The mass of this
body is M . Find the moment of inertia for rotation about an axis through the center of
the circle, perpendicular to the plate.

3. Consider the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. The masses are m and 2m, and the pulley is a
uniform disk of mass m and radius r. The string is massless and does not slip with respect
to the pulley. Using conservation of energy, find the acceleration of the masses once they
are let go.

4. A meterstick is held to a wall by a nail passing through the 60-cm mark (see the figure
below). The meterstick is free to swing about this nail, without friction. If the meterstick
is released from an initial horizontal position, what angular velocity will it attain when it
swings through the vertical position?
