Question:
|x - 2| + |x - 3| = 5
Solution using only the modulus definition
By definition, if |x| = k, then either x = k or x = -k
From the given equation,
|x - 2| = 5 - |x - 3|
If follows therefore from the definition, that either
A. x - 2 = 5 - |x - 3| or
B. x - 2 = -(5 - |x - 3|)
Option A Option B
x-2 = 5 - |x - 3| x - 2 = -(5 - |x - 3|)
x-7 = - |x - 3| x - 2 = -5 + |x - 3|
|x - 3| = 7-x x + 3 = |x - 3|
So |x-3| = x +3
By the definition of modulus, By the definition of modulus,
Either x-3 = 7-x or x - 3 = -(7 - x) Either x-3 = x+3 or x-3 = -(x+3)
2x=10 x - 3 = -7 + x -3 = 3 x-3 = -x-3
x= 5 - 3 = 2 -7 no solution No solution 2x = 0
x=0
So x = 5 is the only possible solution here. So x = 0 is the only possible solution here.
Hence, x = 5 or x = 0.
Substituting these values into the original equation shows then they both satisfy the equation.
Therefore x = 5, or x = 0.
