DESIGN YOUR OWN BOARD GAME TEMPLATES
Notes for teachers, parents and group leaders
These board game templates are provided free to teachers, parents, group leaders and
anyone else who might find them useful. They are intended to be a starting block which
children can use to design their own games.
It is a good idea to provide dice and counters for children when creating their own board
games, dice are cheap and widely available but are much better than making spinners
which rarely give a good result.
Even though we are providing templates we would encourage you to nurture creative
design and some children may prefer to draw their game board from scratch on blank
paper. If they use a template try and encourage them to use it creatively. Perhaps you
could suggest a theme for the group to use for their games.
Keep it simple
Make the game easy to play, with simple rules.
You can always expand your game later.
People should be able to learn the game quickly.
Make it a game for 2 players. Design the board
Just use one dice and one or two counters each.
Make a rough design first before you add artwork. Use a template.
Draw your own.
Think about the rules
Decide what type of
What 's the point of the game? game is it?
How do player's win?
How do players move? Race Game.
Is it just luck or is there skill or strategy? Collecting Game.
Is there any interaction between the players? Strategy Game.
How does the game progress? Quiz Game.
Are there different stages? Battle Game.
Play Testing
Play your game by yourself.
Play your game with someone else.
Listen to what they say about your game.
Think about what works well in your game.
Is there anything that doesn't work.
Do you need to make any changes?
Is there anything that would make your game more fun?
