Notes - Project Management

The document outlines the steps for implementing the Critical Path Method (CPM) in project management, including developing a list of activities, determining completion times, and calculating slack time. It also details the process of creating a project network and conducting forward and backward passes to identify critical activities and their variances. Additionally, it discusses the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) for further analysis of project timelines and probabilities.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: CRITICAL PATH METHOD

MODULE 9
_____________________________________________________________________________________

LESSON 2 - CRITICAL PATH METHOD - STEPS: A. B. C.

A. Develop a list of activities
B. Identify the immediate predecessors
C. Determine Completion Time
D. Draw a project network
E. Identify the ES and EF (Forward Pass)
F. Identify the LS and LF (Backward Pass)
G. Determine the slack time
H. Find the activity with zero slack

D. Project Network Create Nodes/6-cell Boxes for each Activity

AC ES EF

T LS LF

[format]

FORWARD PASS (ES TO EF)

ES - EARLIEST START TIME - earliest time that a task can be started in your project.
W/O PREDECESSOR = 0
W/ PREDECESSOR = ↑ OF EF OF PREDECESSOR
EF - EARLIEST FINISH TIME - earliest an activity can be completed
EF = ES + T (DURATION)
BACKWARD PASS (LF TO LS)
LF - LATEST START TIME - the very last minute in which you can start a task before it causes delay
LS = LF – T (DURATION)
LS - LATEST FINISH TIME - latest an activity can be completed
LAST ACTIVITY = COPY/BRING DOWN EF
NEXT ACTIVITIES = ↓ OF LS OF SUCCESSOR

E. FORWARD PASS (ES TO EF) NO PREDECESSOR

ES = 0
EF = ES + T
=0+6=6

WITH PREDECESSOR

ES = 8 (↑ of EF [6 or 8])
EF = ES + T
= 8 + 10 = 18
F. BACKWARD PASS (LF TO LS) (START FROM LAST ACTIVITY)
H: LF = 45 D: LF = 24 (LS OF F)
LS = 45 – 7 = 38 LS = 24 – 5 = 19

G: LF = 38 (LS OF H) C: LF = 18 ((↓ OF LS [18 or 19])

LS = LS = 38 – 13 = 25 LS = 18 – 10 = 8

F: LF = 38 (LS OF H) B: LF = 8 (LS OF C)
LS = 38 – 14 = 24 LS = 8 – 8 = 0

E: LF = 24 (↓ OF LS [24 or 25]) A: LF = 8 (LS OF C)

LS = 24 – 6 = 18 LS = 8 – 6 = 2

G. SLACK TIME AND ACTIVITIES WITH ZERO SLACK

CRITICAL PATH:

T of Critical Path Activities = 8 + 10 + 6 + 14 + 7 = 45 weeks

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: PROGRAM/PROJECT
EVALUATION AND REVIEW TECHNIQUE

1. Get the Te and σ2 (variance) of every activity.

2. Draw a Project Network Diagram.
3. Identify the ES and EF (Forward Pass)
4. Identify the LS and LF (Backward Pass)
5. Determine the slack time.
6. Find the activity with zero slack.
7. Determine the variance of Critical Activities
8. Determine the Standard Deviation
(Square Root of Summation of CPA)
9. Use Z-test value for Probability.

STEP 1. Te and Variance

ACT a m b Te (T) σ2
A 10 15 26 16 7.13
B 8 10 18 11 2.79
C 4 5 6 5 0.11
D 10 12 14 12 0.45
E 1 2 3 2 0.11
F 1 3 11 4 2.79
G 1 2 3 2 0.11
H 1 2 3 2 0.11
I 3 4 5 4 0.11
J 1 2 5 2.33 0.45

STEP 2-4. Project Network, Forward Pass, Backward Pass

STEP 5-6. Slack Time, Critical Path Activities

ACT ES LS EF LF SLACK CRITICAL

A 0 0 16 16 0 YES
B 0 5 11 16 5 NO
C 16 16 21 21 0 YES
D 0 5 12 17 5 NO
E 12 19 14 21 7 NO
F 12 17 16 21 5 NO
G 21 21 23 23 0 YES
H 23 23 25 25 0 YES
I 16 21 20 25 5 NO
J 25 25 27.33 27.33 0 YES
CRITICAL PATH:

THEREFORE, OUR CRITICAL PATH IS A – C – G – H – J with 27.33 weeks to finish the project.

STEP 7. VARIANCE OF CRITICAL PATH ACTIVITIES

σ2 = 7.13 + 0.11 + 0.11 + 0.11 + 0.45 = 7.91

STEP 8. STANDARD DEVIATION (Square Root of Step 7)

σ = √𝟕. 𝟗𝟏 = 2.81

STEP 9. Z-TEST (Probability to meet 30-week deadline)

𝑻 − 𝑬(𝒕) 𝟑𝟎 − 𝟐𝟕. 𝟑𝟑 𝟐. 𝟔𝟕
𝒁= = = = 𝟎. 𝟗𝟓
𝝈 𝟐. 𝟖𝟏 𝟐. 𝟖𝟏
