3. Division (a) and (b) has three subdivisions (i), (ii) and (iii) which carries 3 marks, 5
marks and 12 marks respectively.

1. a.i) Indicate which of the following variables are quantitative and which are qualitative. (A) Number of
typological errors in newspapers (B) Monthly TV cable bills (C) Marital status of people. (3)
ii) Consider the following two sets (5)

Calculate the standard deviation for each of these two sets. Comment on the relationship between
these two standard deviations.
iii) The distribution of weights of 152 students is as follows: (12)

2.a.i) Indicate in each of the following cases whether the coefficient of correlation is likely to positive

ii) The regression line of y on x is 10y=8x+66 and x on y is 40x=18y+214. Determine the means
of x and y.Also find the correlation coefficient. (5)
iii) A survey was conducted to study the relationship between the sales and the advertisement expenditure.
Estimate the Karl Pearson's correlation coefficient. (12)

3.a.i) An experiment has the four possible mutually exclusive outcomes A, B, C and D. Check whether the
following assignments of probability are permissible.
P(A) = 0.30, P(B) = 0.28, P(C) = 0.26, P(D) = 0.18. Justify your answer. (3)
ii) A bag contains 5 white and 7 black balls. 3 balls are drawn at random. Find the probability that
1 white and 2 black. (5)
iii) Three urns are given each containing red and white chips as given below. Urn I : 6 red 4 white ;
Urn II : 3 red 5 white ; Urn III : 4 red 6 white An urn is chosen at random and a chip is drawn
from the urn. (A) Find the probability that it is white (B) If the chip is white find the probability

ii) A problem in Mathematics is given to three students whose chances of solving it are 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4.

4.a.i) The mean of a binomial distribution is 6 and its standard deviation is 3. Is this statement true or false.
Comment. (3)
ii) The lengths of 3-inch nails manufactured on a machine are normally distributed with a mean 3.0 inches
and a standard deviation of 0.009 inch. The nails that are either shorter than 2.98 inches or longer than
3.02 inches are unusable. What percentage of all the nails produced by this machine is unusable? (5)
iii) A certain newspaper contains an average of 1.1 typographical errors per page. Using the Poisson
distribution find the probability that a randomly selected page of this newspaper will contain
(A) exactly 4 errors (B) more than 3 errors (C) less than or equal to 4 errors. (12)

4.b.i) The time (in hours) required to repair a machine is exponentially distributed with parameter .
What is the probability that the repair time exceeds 2 hours? (3)
ii) A pair of dice is thrown 10 times. If getting a doublet is considered as success, find the probability of
atleast 2 success. (5)
iii) Let x be a continuous random variable that is normally distributed with a mean 25 and a standard
deviation 6. Find the probability that x assumes a value (A) between 29 and 36 (B) between 22 and 33
(C) greater than 30. (12)
5.a. i) What do the letters in the symbolic representation of a queueing model represent? (3)
ii) Explain the characteristics of a queueing system. (5)
iii) Arrivals at a telephone booth are considered to be Poisson with an average time of 12 min. between
one arrival and the next. The length of a phone call is assumed to be distributed exponentially with
mean 4 min. (A) Find the average number of persons waiting in the system (B) What is the probability
that a person arriving at the booth will have to wait in the queue? (C) Estimate the fraction of the day
when the phone will be in use. (12)

b. i) Distinguish between steady state system and transient state system. (3)
ii) A duplicate machine maintained for office use is operated by an office assistant who earns Rs. 5 Per
hour. The time to complete each job varies according to an exponential distribution with mean 6 min.
Assume a Poisson input with an average arrival rate of 5 jobs per hour. If an 8-h day is used as a base,
determine (A) the percentage idle time of the machine (B) the average time a job is in the system. (5)
iii) Customers arrive at aone man barber shop according to a Poisson process with a mean interarrival
time of 20 min. customers spend an average of 15 min. in a barber's chair. (A) What is the expected
number of customers in the barber shop? In the queue? (B) What is the probability that the customer
will not have to wait for a hair cut? (C) What is the average time the customer spend in the queue? (12)
