Guruji On Mahāgaṇapati Tarpaṇam
MODULE 2

PASSAGE FROM THE BOOK “GIFTS FROM THE GODDESS”:

“For now, let us discuss just the first step—the movement from
solid to liquid, meaning from shape to shapelessness, which is
described as Gaṇapati in the tradition of Śrī Vidyā.

In Gaṇapati Tarpaṇās, we start by forming a pyramid from a paste

of impurities that is connected to idea of “my body.” As the
mantras are repeated, spoon after spoon of perfumed water is
poured over the pyramidal form, a symbol of spirit encased in a
ŚRĪ VIDYĀ BEGINNER’S COURSE

body. As your actions dissolve this pyramid, you experience the

ecstasy of flowing out from your body. And as this physical body
dissolves, so does your individual consciousness dissolve into the
collective consciousness.

Let me explain. Suppose that four of us perform this ritual

together, placing four turmeric pyramids into a single large plate.
Initially each pyramid (meaning each of us as individuals) contains
its own awareness. But as the pyramids dissolve under the
constant dripping of water, these awarenesses gradually leak out
and blend together—and in the end, they all become one.

What have we achieved by doing this? Well, four separate people

have become one single person. And this larger “person”
contains all of our collective ideas. So now each of us knows the
thoughts of the other three as if they were our own. We don’t
have to tell one another what we’re thinking. That’s why the first
step in Śrī Vidyā is giving the mantra of Gaṇeśa. It enlarges your
ideas about who you are—so that the people you know can
support your ideas, and you can support theirs.”

Morning Routine
MODULE 2

GURU PĀDUKĀ MANTRA & MAHĀGAṆAPATI MEDITATION:

Get up early in the morning and worship the feet of the Guru on the top of your head by
chanting the mantra twice with mṛgi mudrā. Imagine that from the feet of the Guru the
cool flow of the Ganges water is flowing over your body.

aiṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ aiṁ klīṁ sauḥ

haṁsaḥ śivaḥ soham hasakhaphreṁ

Mṛgi mudrā
Next, imagine that the center of your heart there is a shining ball of sun, orange in color
rising on the horizon. In that, visualize the form of Mahāgaṇapati, orange in color.
Imagine that your whole body is filled with light, the surface of the body is like a balloon.
Inside it is the orange light of Mahāgaṇapati and this glow is also coming out of your
body.

Slowly recite Mahāganapati mūlamantra 4 times. With each of the 28 bījās in the mantra,
imagine a ball of light going down the spine to hit and penetrate the earth.

MORNING OFFERING TO MAHĀGAṆAPATI:

Next when you take a bath, offer water (arghya) to Mahāgaṇapati situated in the rising
Sun (hold a palmful of water, face East [even if you can’t see the sun] and make an
offering by reciting the following mantra and letting the water flow out):

oṁ tat puruṣāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi tanno dantiḥ pracodayāt

MAHĀGAṆAPATI TARPAṆAM 11 ENGLISH VERSION

Preparatory Steps
MODULE 2

PLACE THE BETEL LEAF AND MAKE A TURMERIC FORM:

1. Sit down facing East (if, due to the circumstances, that can’t be achieved, then the direction you are
sitting can be considered East for the purposes of tarpaṇam. Avoid facing South).
2. Recite Guru Pāduka mantra 2x with mṛgi mudrā.
3. Put the betel leaf on a deep plate with its tip facing eastward (away from you).
4. By mixing a teaspoon of turmeric powder with some water, make a semisolid paste of it. Use this
paste to create a four-sided pyramid, which symbolizes Mahāgaṇapati. The form should be solid and
should not have any cracks.
ŚRĪ VIDYĀ BEGINNER’S COURSE

INVOKE MAHĀGAṆAPATI:

1. Place kumkum dots on all the four sides of the pyramid.

2. Place it on the leaf and, while touching it with a flower, recite the following mantra:

oṁ tat puruṣāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi tanno dantiḥ pracodayāt

SANCTIFY THE WATER:

1. Put some perfume/sandalwood powder in the water and stir it.

2. Place the mudrā connecting thumb and ring-finger of your right hand into in a vessel of water and
recite mūlamantra 7 times:

oṁ śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ glauṁ gaṁ gaṇapataye varavarada sarvajanaṁ me vaśamānaya svāhā
3. After that, proceed to perform the 444 tarpaṇams.

NOTE: Have a larger vessel or a bottle with water standing nearby, and use it to add more water to your
pañcapātram. You don't need to sanctify your pañcapātram every time you add a new water to it since
the water that is already there should sanctify the rest automatically.
