INTRODUCTION

THANK YOU FROM THE SANAKO CORPORATION FOR PURCHASING

THE STUDY MOBILE SOLUTION.

Live, teacher-led interaction is at the heart of the SANAKO

approach to learning. Here at SANAKO we believe that our
Study solution provides the most innovative interactive ICT
learning platform to improve learning outcomes.
The Study Mobile module is based upon the NOKIA N800
and N810 Internet Tablets to provide teachers and students
with a stimulating environment, while focusing student
activity, providing support, guidance, and assessing
progress. This innovative and proven solution recognizes
that personalization has become an increasingly important
part of learning both now and in the future. Teaching
methods that can build upon the links between the home and
the school have been the most effective and rewarding way
to ensure that students can CHOOSE TO LEARN. However,
it is recognised that whilst in a classroom environment there
may be a need to keep students focussed and where
appropriate apply a degree of control. This solution provides
the teachers with an easy to use graphical interface from
which they can focus and effectively manage student
learning.
In order to bring the combined benefits of hand-held learning,
the NOKIA N800/N810 device and our Study software to
your learning environment SANAKO have created a whole
school solution that includes:
• NOKIA N800 and N810 Internet Tablet devices
• SANAKO Study 500 Software
• SANAKO Study Mobile application loaded to the
student devices
• Access to the CHOOSE TO LEARN web portal

Introduction • 3
SANAKO want to work with you as a partner in order to help
you recognise and exploit the benefits of our solution. A
positive impact depends upon the ways in which these
devices are used and hence the capacity of both teachers
and students to make use of them as an effective
pedagogical tool with authentic purpose.

SANAKO would strongly recommend that you frequently

check the web portal below

www.choosetolearn.co.uk

This portal has lots of links to useful applications and

suggested content. Your school will also have a login to the
support area of the portal that allows you to check for training
resources, ask us a question and also download useful
software to help your teaching aims.

This User Manual has been broken down into three distinct
sections;

Lesson Preparation
Lesson Delivery
Lesson Management

We look forward to helping you to get the best from your

investment.

LESSON PREPARATION

2.1 LAUNCHING THE TUTOR SOFTWARE

The Tutor software can be launched by selecting the Start-
All Programs – SANAKO Study – Tutor option as shown at
Figure 1 below.

Figure 1 – Launching the teacher software from the START MENU in Windows XP

Study will then run and, depending on your setup, you will
see the screen below at Figure 2.

Figure 2 – The Tutor application and selection screen

The Tutor and class selection window, highlighted in a red

line, will only display if Tutor login is requested at start up in
the preferences. If the Tutor and class selection window
appears, select your name from the list and the class in
which you are to teach in and then click OK. If your name
does not appear then select Anonymous and Template
Class. If Tutor login is not requested at start up, you will go

Lesson Preparation • 5
in to the default classroom layout and you will not be asked
to select either a Tutor or a Class option. The selection of
individual Tutor accounts provides you with the following
advantages but does require support from your network
manager to create the required directory structure. SANAKO
would be happy to provide advice and support if required.
• Teachers can have their own set of class files saved
for immediate access from within the Tutor files area –
no more need to search around for files during the
lesson.
• Teachers can create their own list of preferred
applications that can be launched to students. This is
a very powerful tool when combined with a screen
lock i.e. only allow students to work on the
applications you launch to them!
Once the Tutor software has been launched the student
positions will appear if you have selected the appropriate
classroom layout. However, if they do not appear then you
can click Show corridor (at the bottom of the teacher screen)
to add students to your class.

2.2 PREPARING YOUR LESSON MATERIAL

Why use the Files area?
• To present students with a 'play list'/choice of files to
work through – thus saving time and confusion!
• Allow students to work on a variety of different file
types at their own pace – they simply double click on
the file link to launch it.
• To differentiate your students and present different
material to different sessions based on subject area
and/or ability level
• To allow teachers to have their own set of “easy to
find” files for their own lesson needs – this does
require the configuration of individual teacher logins
as described at section 2.1 previously.

Figure 3 – The Files area icon on the Tutor screen

6 • SANAKO Study 1200 User Guide

Click on 'Files' as shown at Figure 3 above within the red
circle and the Files window shown at Figure 4 below will
appear

Figure 4 – The Files area

The Tutor files area is shown at Figure 4 as the bottom part

of the screen. It is this area that can be used by teachers to
create a set of folders for safe storage and immediate access
during their lessons from whichever room they are teaching
in – as shown at Figure 5. If the system is configured to
allow you to select your name from the list when launching
the Tutor application (as shown at Figure 2) then every
single teacher has their own separate file area that appears
wherever they login at.

It is recommended that you use the icons to create

a set of folders. This is no different in principle to the way
that your My Documents folder in Windows is broken down
into sub-sections such as My Pictures, My Music etc… It
simply means that you can place teaching material into an
appropriate structure that exactly matches the way you
teach.

Figure 5 – Tutor files area with Year folders

Lesson Preparation • 7
Figure 5 provides an example of a typical folder structure
used by teachers. By creating a new folder for each year
group you can help to find material quickly in your lessons
and hence present it to the students. If you were to say
double click on the Year 10 text you would then see the
contents of the Year 10 folder as shown at Figure 6 below.

Figure 6 – Tutor files – Year 10 area with sub -folders

The path at the bottom right of the screen tells you what
folder you are located in at that time. You can move back up
the folder structure by pressing the icon.
• All the files added to your Tutor area are NOT
removed unless by you.
• Files can be added or removed from your Tutor area
when there are no active students in your class or
during a classroom session.
• Any type of file can be added such as.DOC, .PPT,
.MP3 etc…
• You can add files from any source you want such as a
USB device, floppy disk or downloaded ones. It will
take a copy of that file and not just move the file.

2.2 GETTING STUDENTS TO JOIN YOUR LESSON

Students can launch the Study Mobile application on their
NOKIA device from either the Application or Personal Menu
of the device. The Sanako Mobile logo will appear as shown
below at Figure 7 from whatever menu it has been added to.

Figure 7 – The Sanako Mobile application logo on the N800/N810 device

The students simply click the icon to launch the login

process.
The following window will appear and the students have to
enter their name and then click the LOGIN icon.

8 • SANAKO Study 1200 User Guide

Figure 8 – Study mobile student login screen

Once the student enters their name and clicks LOGIN then
one of three different scenarios will follow.

SCENARIO 1 – THE TUTOR IS ALREADY RUNNING AND

YOU ARE ADDED TO THE CLASS LAYOUT
IMMEDIATELY
In this scenario the student will see the standard Study
Mobile client window as shown below.

Figure 9 – Main student screen Figure 10. Active student icon on a Tutor screen

The student is now part of the class and appears as an

active student on the Tutor interface.
Should a student either accidentally or deliberately enter the
wrong name then you can simply right click on that student
and edit the given name as shown at Figure 11.

Figure 11 – How to change a student name

Lesson Preparation • 9
SCENARIO 2 – THE TUTOR IS ALREADY RUNNING BUT
THEY NEED TO ADD YOU TO THE CLASS FROM THE
CORRIDOR
In this scenario the student will see the “Waiting to be
assigned to a class” message and the Study Mobile client
will remain greyed out until that student is added from the
corridor by the Tutor.

Figure 12 – Student login screen waiting Figure 13 – Inactive student icon on a

Tutor screen

SCENARIO 3 – THE TUTOR IS NOT RUNNING

This message is only displayed if there is no Tutor available
to assign you to a class.

Figure 14 – Tutor is not running indication to students

Simply try again later when a tutor is ready and waiting.

TIP: Please ensure that your students have either connected

their device to a mains power supply or have sufficient
battery life left for the duration of your lesson. When fully
charged the devices should easily last between 4 and 6
hours dependent upon usage.

LESSON DELIVERY

3.1 PLACING YOUR STUDENTS INTO DIFFERENT

SESSIONS (GROUPING)
Why use sessions to put students in to different groups?
• To give students different work/activities/tasks to
different groups
• To match students of equal ability
• To group students of differing ability to help improve
grades e.g. lower with higher ability students
When the Tutor software is started the default is that ALL
students are added to Session A.
You can move students to a different session in one of two
different ways;

1ST WAY TO ADD STUDENTS TO A NEW GROUP

Figure 15 – Right click method to move students to a new session

• Right- click on a student icon on the Tutor screen and

follow the Move to session path as shown above at
Figure 15.
• Choose a session from A to F

2ND WAY TO ADD STUDENTS TO A NEW GROUP

• Choose the session you'd like to work with from the
tabs A-F

Lesson Delivery • 11
• In the 'Select Members for The Session' area click on
'Add' icon

Figure 16 – Using the add icon to change student session members

• Holding the left-hand mouse button down,

highlight/drag over the students you want to add or
click on individuals
• Students will then be part of the chosen session

3.2 LAUNCHING FILES TO STUDENTS TO WORK ON

IMMEDIATELY
In exactly the same way as you have previously prepared
your files you can now present material to your students via
the FILES menu shown within the RED circle at Figure 17.

Figure 17 – Accessing the Files area

The Files area is broken down into three distinct areas and
these areas are shown at Figure 18:
• Area 1 – The command toolbars
• Area 2 – The student file areas
• Area 3 – The tutor file area (for more information on
the tutor file area, see section 2.2)

12 • SANAKO Study 1200 User Guide

Figure 18 – The three distinct areas of the Files window

The Area 1 icons are shown and explained in detail at Figure

19. They are dependent upon which window is active at that
time. For example if you have the Personal
Relationships.doc file highlighted (as is the case in Figure
18) then any command that you select will only apply to that
file and that session (i.e. Session B in this case).

3.2.1 AREA 1 – THE COMMAND TOOLBARS

Figure 19 – The command icons in the FILES area

The above icons at Figure 19 are explained individually

below.

SETTINGS – should only be used by the network

administrator to define the file area locations on the network

PREVIEW a file on your screen prior to launching. This

allows you to check the material for suitability before
launching or presenting the material to the students.

LAUNCH a file to the selected students that has already

been added to the Files area – the file that gets launched will
be the one that has been previously selected by you and
highlighted with a blue background.

COPY AND LAUNCH a file to the selected students that

has already been added to the Files area – the file will then
be copied to the local hard drive of the NOKIA device and
then launched. This can be very useful for launching audio

Lesson Delivery • 13
and video files as you can be assured that they run
smoothly.

LAUNCH FROM …. Allows you to open a file to the

students from ANY source such as a USB pen-stick – it does
not have to been added to the Files area previously.

CANCEL A FILE AREA LAUNCH OR COPY AND

LAUNCH allows the teacher to close a previously launched
file to the students. The file that is selected and highlighted
will be closed at the student positions.

CANCEL A LAUNCH FROM …. FILE allows the teacher

to close a previously launched file from a source other than
from the Files area.

ADD A FILE TO THE FILES AREA allows the teacher to

create a list of files for immediate use by the students. The
files can be added to the session areas (A,B,C,D,E,F) or the
Tutor area. These files will be saved between lessons.

DELETE the selected file from any area

You can also right click on any file to Delete, Copy or

preview.

3.2.2 AREA 2 – THE STUDENT FILE AREAS

There are six different student file areas (A,B,C,D,E,F) and
you can therefore create up to six different playlists for your
students in that lesson. This means that different students
are presented with different file from which they can simply
double click to launch. Files can be added as the lesson
progresses so that you present the material in response to
their needs or the progress made. The file area is dynamic
so any file that gets added or removed by the tutor is
immediately reflected in the student application.
Figure 20 below shows how the students in session A have
been given a playlist of three files. The students assigned to
different sessions would see totally different files. To see
ALL the file areas the Tutor simply clicks the icon.

14 • SANAKO Study 1200 User Guide

Figure 20 shows how a tutor has used the ADD command
(shown with a blue rectangle surrounding it) to add files to
the [A] session area (surrounded by a red rectangle)

Figure 20 – Creating student file playlists

As soon as the file is added to the [A] area above it will be

listed in the Session resources area on the student
application. You can see that the same files are listed at
Figure 21.

Figure 21 –Session resources on the student device

If the student cannot read the file names and/or the list is too
long for the limited window space on the main page (shown
with a red rectangle around it) then they can click on the
MAIN PAGE icon (shown with a blue rectangle surrounding
it). This will result in the windows shown at Figure 23 being
displayed.

Lesson Delivery • 15
Figure 22 –Session resources on the student device

Figure 23 – Pop-out menu items

Once the students click the “Pop-out Session resources”

option from the above menu they will be presented with the
Session resources window shown at Figure 24.

Figure 24 –Session resources expanded view

The students can then read long filenames with ease and
simply double-click the file to launch it.
To close the Session resources window click on OK.
If you move a student to a different session then the files
presented to that student will change accordingly.
If you add a file the students must have an application
loaded on their device that allows them to work with that
material. For example, if you add a PDF document then the
students must have a PDF viewer application installed.
The files are being run from the SANAKO Study Mobile
LAMP server so if you have large numbers of students or
your wireless network is slow then the time taken to launch
the files can be longer.

16 • SANAKO Study 1200 User Guide

If you add a web link to the file resources then the students
must have Internet access in order to be able to connect to
the given web page.

3.3 LAUNCHING WEB PAGES TO STUDENTS AND

KEEPING THEM ON A CERTAIN PAGE
Why use the Web browsing activity/Web browser?
• To launch the internet and direct students to a specific
page/site to save time and confusion
• To provide a web tour where the student browsers
stay on the same page as you are viewing.

To open up the Tutor’s browser, click on the

icon in the Tutor screen. This will result in
the browser screen appearing on the Tutor PC. An example
of the Tutor web browser is shown at Figure 25.

Figure 25 –Tutor web browser

• Pressing Send will open the student browser to

the same page as the Tutor

• Pressing Follow will make the student browser go

to wherever the Tutor is browsing to and keep them
on the same page as the Tutor
