Duration: 1 hour 30min MM:40

General Instructions:
• All questions are compulsory.
• Section A comprises of 10 questions, each carrying one mark.
• Section B comprises of 4 questions, each carrying two marks.
• Section C comprises of 3 questions, each carrying three marks.
• Section D comprises of 1 question, each carrying five marks.

SECTION A
(MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS) 1x10=10
1. Which of the following has the highest kinetic energy?
A) Ice
B) Water
C) Steam
D) Salt

2. Which of the following statements is true?

A) Particles of matter do not have space between them
B) Particles of matter are in a state of rest
C) Particles of matter are continuously moving
D) Particles of matter are only found in solids

3. Which one of the following is an example of diffusion?

A) Ice melting in water
B) Sugar dissolving in water
C) Smell of perfume spreading in a room
D) Water boiling

4. Which condition increases the rate of diffusion in gases?

A) Low temperature
B) High pressure
C) Increase in temperature
D) Decrease in volume

5. The jelly-like substance that fills the cell is called:

A) Nucleoplasm
B) Cytoplasm
C) Protoplasm
D) Cell sap

ASSERTION AND REASONING QUESTIONS

These consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer the questions selecting the
appropriate option given below:
a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c) A is true but R is false.
d) A is false but R is true.

6. Assertion (A): The slope of a distance-time graph gives the speed of the object.
Reason (R): Speed is the ratio of total distance travelled to the total time taken.

7. Assertion (A): A body moving with uniform velocity has zero acceleration.
Reason (R): Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.

8. Assertion (A): If the velocity of an object is decreasing, the object is said to have negative acceleration.
Reason (R): Negative acceleration is also called retardation.

9. Assertion (A): The plasma membrane is selectively permeable.

Reason (R): It allows only gases to pass through it.

10. Assertion (A): Plant cells do not burst when placed in hypotonic solution.
Reason (R): The cell wall prevents excessive expansion of the cell.

SECTION B 2x4 = 8

11. Meera spread a few drops of perfume in one corner of the room. Within a few minutes, the fragrance
could be smelled all over the room.

a) What property of matter is shown in this activity?

b) Which characteristic of particles of matter is responsible for this?

12. Riya is preparing a science project on weather and climate. While researching, she found a weather
report from NASA stating that the average surface temperature on Mars is about 210 K. She wants to
compare it with Earth's average temperature, which is about 15°C. Help her find out which planet is
colder and by how much, using proper conversion.

a) Convert the temperature of Mars from Kelvin to Celsius.

b) Which planet is colder and by how many degrees Celsius?

13. Give reason for the following observation.

The smell of hot sizzling food reaches us even from a considerable distance. But to get the smell of
cold food, we have to get close to it.

14. State the two main postulates of the cell theory. Name the scientists who proposed it.

SECTION C 3x3=9
15. Why do liquids have a fixed volume but no fixed shape? Explain based on the movement and
arrangement of particles.

16. Two vehicles start from the same point and travel in the same direction, one with uniform velocity and
the other with uniform acceleration. Which vehicle will cover more distance in 10 seconds? Explain.

17. A body starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s² for 10 seconds.
a) What is its final velocity?
b) How much distance does it cover in this time?
c) If the same body moves with the final velocity for another 5 seconds, what total distance will it have
covered?
SECTION D 5x1=5
(DIAGRAM BASED QUESTIONS)
18. Observe the diagram given below carefully and answer the following questions:

Questions:

1. Identify and label any four parts in both diagrams.

2. State two structural differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
3. Give one example each of an organism with a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell.

SECTION E 4x2=8
(CASE STUDY BASED QUESTIONS)

19. Riya was observing onion peel cells under a microscope in her biology lab. She noticed a thin outer
layer surrounding the cell and a large, dense structure in the center. She asked her teacher about the
functions of these parts. Her teacher explained that the outer layer is called the plasma membrane,
which controls what enters and leaves the cell, and the dense structure is the nucleus, which controls all
cellular activities.
She also compared animal and plant cells and found that plant cells have an additional cell wall that
provides rigidity. She was curious to know more about how materials move in and out of cells and the
role of diffusion and osmosis in this process.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is the function of the plasma membrane in a cell?
2. How does the cell wall differ from the plasma membrane?
3. Define osmosis. How is it different from diffusion?
4. What are the two main functions of the nucleus in a cell?

20. The speed – time graph of a body is as shown in fig:

(a) What type of motion is represented by OA

(b) What type of motion is represented by AB
(c) Calculate the retardation of the body .
(d) Calculate the distance travelled by the body from 0 to C .
