PRESENTER: Human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights that affects millions worldwide. It's
a complex issue involving forced labor, sex trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.Trafficking is the
act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring, or receiving individuals through force, fraud, or
coercion for the purpose of exploitation. This exploitation may include forced labor, sexual slavery, or
other forms of commercial sexual exploitation. It is considered a serious violation of human rights and a
form of modern slavery. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates there were 24.9 million
victims of human trafficking around the world. The term “forced labour” is used to describe the forms
of exploitation commonly referred to as human trafficking in the United States and other nations. The
24.9 million figure includes both sex trafficking, or commercial sexual exploitation, and forced labor
exploitation, both in the private sector and state-imposed. 20.1 million labor trafficking victims the 24.9
million estimated victims of trafficking, the ILO found in 2016 there were about 20.1 million victims of
labor trafficking globally. This includes any person who has been forced to work or perform a service
under threats of penalty or harm. In many places, this can look like being forced to work in a factory, on
a farm, or as a domestic worker. 9.2 million victims were men, and 10.9 million were women. 3.3 million
were children. The ILO also estimated there were 4.8 million sex trafficking victims experiencing
commercial sexual exploitation around the world in 2016.

PRESENTER:Women and children continue to make up the majority of victims worldwide. According to
the Global Estimates (2021), an estimated amount of 50 million people are living in "modern-day
slavery" across the globeChild victims are increasingly detected globally; The United Nations Global
Report on Trafficking in Persons (2024) estimates around 38% of trafficking victims to be boys and girls.
In 2024, the U.S. Department of State estimates that 2 million children are exploited by the global
commercial sex trade. In the same year, a study classified 14 million individuals worldwide as "forced
laborers, bonded laborers or sex-trafficking victims". Approximately 2 million of these individuals are
children working as commercial sex slaves, with women and girls comprising 98% of that 2 million. In
January 2024, UNODC published the new edition of the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons. The
report reveals that 38% of all victims of human trafficking detected globally between 2020 and 2023
were children, with girls accounting for 22% and boys for 16% of all detected victims. This marks a 31%
increase in child detections since 2019, with a sharper 38% increase among girls. The report
documented victims of at least 162 different nationalities, detected in 128 countries, with 31% of all
cross-border flows involving African victims—making Africa the region with the most internationally
trafficked victims.

CUE OUT: human trafficking causes 0'55(2)

PRESENTER:Poverty and lack of educational and economic opportunities in one's hometown may lead
women to voluntarily migrate and then be involuntarily trafficked into sex work. As globalization opened
up national borders to greater exchange of goods and capital, labour migration also increased. Less
wealthy countries have fewer options for livable wages. The economic impact of globalization pushes
people to make conscious decisions to migrate and be vulnerable to trafficking. Gender inequalities that
hinder women from participating in the formal sector also push women into informal sectors.

PRESENTER:Human trafficking victims come from all walks of life, but they're often lured by false
promises of a better life, job opportunities, or a chance to escape poverty. Once trapped, they're
subjected to physical and emotional abuse, and are forced to work in industries like agriculture,
construction, or domestic work.Traffickers use various tactics to control their victims, including violence,
intimidation, and manipulation. They often target vulnerable individuals, exploiting their fears and
weaknesses. Traffickers may also use technology, such as social media, to lure and recruit victims.

emotional trauma, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Victims may
also experience social isolation, loss of identity, and a loss of trust in others. These victims experience
repeated abuse, violence, and exploitation, leading to complex trauma and long-term psychological
damage.Victims are often trapped in situations where they feel powerless and unable to escape.Victims
may be exposed to diseases, injuries, and other health risks due to poor working conditions or
abuse. There are many organizations and governments working to combat human trafficking efforts

the risks and signs of trafficking.Strengthening laws and law enforcement efforts to identify and

can all play a role in combating human trafficking by raising awareness, supporting organizations that
work with victims, and advocating for policies that protect vulnerable individuals. By working together,
we can help bring an end to human trafficking and ensure that victims receive the support and justice
they deserve.
