N.B. These are the sample question-answers ONLY.
1. What is computer memory? What is the use of it?
Ans: The storage capacity of a computer is called its memory.
It enables the computer to store data, instructions and information
2. Define binary digits or bits , byte and binary language.
Ans: Binary digits or bits: The digit 0 and 1 are called binary digits or bits. A bit is the most basic unit of
computer memory. It is the smallest chunk of information a computer can work with.
Byte: A collection of 8 bits is called byte. Byte is the unit of measuring computer m emory.
Binary Language: The sequence of 0’s and 1’s that the computer processes is known as binary
language.
3. What is volatile memory? Give example.
Ans: The kind of memory that losses its contents when the power is turned off is called volatile memory.
Example: RAM (Random Access Memory)
4. Write the differences between primary and secondary memory.
Primary Memory Secondary Memory
a. Primary memory is called internal memory and a. Secondary memory is called external memory
is the main area in a computer where data, where programs and data are stored for future
instructions and information stored. referencing.
b. Primary memory is directly accessible by the b. Secondary memory is not directly accessible by
CPU. the CPU.
c. Primary memory is volatile memory and has c. Secondary memory is non-volatile memory and
limited capacity. have a much larger storage capacity.
5. Write short note on Hard disk.
Ans: The hard disk is the main storage device inside the computer. It contains metal discs known as
platters, which are coated with a magnetic material and rotate at a very high speed. It has a read/write
head that moves across the surface of the platters.

6. What are the form of CD-ROMS? Explain.
Ans: CD-ROMs are available in two main forms:
CD-R: It stands for CD-recordable. Data can be written onto it just once to be read later. Data once written
onto it cannot be erased.
CD-RW: It stands for CD-rewritable. It is also known as Erasable-CD. Data once written onto it can be
erased to write or record new information.
7. Write 4 features of flash drive. / Why flash drive is widely used storage device?
Ans: Features of flash drive are:
a. It can be used to read, write, delete or transfer data.
b. A flash drive comes in various storage capacities like 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB,16 GB and
so on.
c. It is easy to use and small enough to be carried around in one’s pocket.
d. A USB port is needed to use a flash drive.
8. Fill in the blanks:
a. 1 _________= 4 bits (nibble)
b. _______________has the features of both primary and secondary memory. (ROM)
c. Data can be erased by using _______________from EPROM. (ultraviolet light)
d. DVD stands for _____________________. (Digital Versatile Disc)
e. A hard disk is made up of a collection of discs called ______________. (platters)
9. True/False:
a. Primary memory is temporary. (True)
b. Hard disk drives come in only 500 GB capacity. (False)
c. A computer can understand and process only binary inputs. (True)
d. ROM is volatile memory. (False)
e. Information are the commands that tell the computer how to work. (False)
