The aim of this activity is to explore the relationship between form and function, considering how design choices impact both the practicality
and aesthetic appeal of the piece
C. Product
1. A functional ceramic piece (e.g., mug, plate, or vase)
2. An artist intention statement
3. Artwork Review (UJIAN PRAKTEK)
D. Task Description
a. Artist Intention/ Moodboard
i. Write them in canva/gdocs
ii. Write your full name and class in the top right hand corner
iii. Write an expanded intention statement reflecting on the:
1. Initial idea
2. Three concept sketches for functional ceramic (Optional)
3. creation process
4. the artistic choices made
5. how the finished piece achieves balance between function and artistic expression
iv. If you want to explain it in drawing or images, please take a photo of your drawings and put it into your document.
b. Functional Ceramic Piece
i. Using hand-building techniques (e.g., slab, coil, or pinch methods), construct the selected piece
ii. Focus on creating a structurally sound, functional form with attention to proportion, texture, and craftsmanship.
iii. Refine the piece by smoothing seams, correcting imperfections, and enhancing the visual appeal with texture or patterns
iv. Ensure the piece meets its functional purpose (e.g., stable base for a vase, ergonomic handle for a mug).
c. Artwork Review (UJIAN PRAKTEK)
i. Write a 1-2 page review reflecting on your sculpture in docs format.
ii. Explain the strengths and challenges of working with clay. Consider factors like texture, plasticity, drying time,
underglazing.
iii. Explain how your approach shapes the final piece. What adjustments did you make along the way? What do you think
you did right and things you have not achieved in making ceramic pieces?
iv. Evaluate how well your piece fulfills its intended function. Does it work as you envisioned? How does its form relate to its
use?
v. Reflect on what you learned about how techniques impact both aesthetics and usability in ceramics.
