Kinematics I B

The document is a weekly test on Kinematics I with a total of 40 marks and a duration of 1 hour. It contains problems involving the motion of a lion chasing a zebra, a car decelerating to avoid a pedestrian, and a goods train traveling between two signals. Each problem includes specific tasks such as calculations and sketching graphs related to the scenarios presented.

Weekly Test (Mechanics)

Marks: 40
Topic: Kinematics I (Set B) Time: 1 hour

Name: ___________________________________ Class: ____ Date: ____________

1. A lion is watching a zebra from 35m behind it. Both are stationary. The lion then starts chasing
by accelerating at a constant rate of 3 𝑚𝑠 −2 for 5s. Once at top speed the lion decelerates at
0.5 𝑚𝑠 −2. The zebra starts moving 1s after the lion started, accelerating at a constant rate of
2 𝑚𝑠 −2 for 7 s before maintaining a constant speed.
(a) Show that the lion has not caught the zebra after 8 s. [3]
(b) Show that the gap between them at time t s, for 𝑡 > 8, after the start of the lion’s motion is
1 2 51
given by 𝑡 − 5𝑡 + and hence determine when the lion catches the zebra, or when the lion
4 2
gets closest and how close it gets. [5]

2. A car is travelling at V 𝑚𝑠 −1 along a straight road and passes point A at t = 0. When the car is at
point A the driver sees a pedestrian crossing the road at a point B ahead and decelerates at 1 𝑚𝑠 −2
for 6 seconds. The car then travels at a constant speed and reaches B after a further 6 seconds. The
distance AB is at 180 m.
(a) Sketch a velocity–time graph for the car’s journey. [3]
(b) Determine the value of V. [3]

3. A goods train travels along a straight track between two signals. The train has speed 3 𝑚𝑠 −1 as
it passes through the first signal. The train moves with constant acceleration 0.5 𝑚𝑠 −2 for the first
30 s, then with constant speed for 180 s, and finally with constant deceleration 0.12 𝑚𝑠 −2 to come
to rest at the second signal.
(a) Find the total time taken for the train to travel between the two signals. [3]
(b) Calculate the distance between the two signals. [2]
(c) Find, to the nearest whole number, the percentage of the distance between the two signals that
the train travels at more than half the maximum speed. [2]
