Introduction
Data integrity is defined as the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of GxP data
throughout its lifecycle. Oversight is required for steps including initial generation and
recording, processing (such as analysis, transformation, or migration), use, retention,
retrieval, archiving, and eventual destruction.
Data integrity involves managing, controlling, and documenting each of these steps so that
activity records comply with ALCOA+ principles outlined in relevant guidelines. The ALCOA+
principles have been established in the industry for several years and are commonly
implemented.
Data integrity compliance for paper, electronic, and hybrid systems requires applying these
principles through practical controls, ensuring that GxP-related business decisions can be
verified and inspected at all stages of the data lifecycle.
Current guidelines further emphasize the importance of conducting comprehensive data
integrity risk assessments.
These assessments are fundamental for determining the appropriate organizational and
technical controls to implement, ensuring they are commensurate with the specific level of
risk posed to product quality attributes.
By systematically evaluating the potential vulnerabilities and impact on data quality at
each stage of the data lifecycle, companies can design layered controls and processes that
effectively safeguard data integrity.
The risk-based approach not only aligns with regulatory expectations but also promotes a
culture of proactive quality management across the organization.
