Protocol I : User Maintenance

SUCTION PUMP, ELECTRICAL (Medela Vario 18),


Equipment

lid daily. Sterilize all jars, lids and vacuum tubing weekly.
Tools Surfanios*, Hexanios*, clean water, soft lint-free cloth, syringe, autoclave

WARNING: Electric shock danger. Unplug the device from


the power supply before following these instructions.

After each patient


1 • Wipe the outside of the suction pump with a soft lint-
free cloth humidified with Surfanios* solution. Ensure
the exhaust at the bottom of the unit is clean.
• Dispose of single-use PVC patient tubing. Replace the 1l
jar (also during use) when jar is 2/3 full.
• Use a clean (disinfected or sterilized) 1l suction jar and
lid for each new patient.

WARNING: Do not submerge the device or spray liquids


directly on it. Do not hold the device under running water.
Spray the disinfectant on a cloth. Ensure the cloth is moist
but not dripping.

2 At the end of each day


• Remove patient and vacuum tubing and unlock the two Lid clamps
lid clamps from the 1l jar.
• Remove the overflow protection device and safely
dispose the jar content (secretions) and patient tubing in
accordance with infection control guidelines.
• Soak the 1l jar and lid in a solution of Hexanios* for 15
min according to hygiene protocols and disinfection
procedures.
• Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Overflow protection device

WARNING: Be sure to replace the overflow protection
device. It must be refitted correctly to protect the machine.
Make sure that the float moves freely and closes the tube
when lifted.

WARNING: Never fill the jar with more than 2/3 of the
volume.

3 At the end of each week


• Clean and disinfect the suction jars (1000 and 250 ml),
lids and vacuum tubes made of silicone.
• Use a syringe to make sure that the Hexanios* solution
goes inside the vacuum tubes.
• Rinse everything with clean water and dry thoroughly.
• After proper disinfection, sterilize all jars, lids and any
silicone vacuum tube shorter than one metre

* In countries with import restrictions an equivalent local product (validated by the HQ Hygiene Referent) may be used.

B Check and change the antibacterial filter

Check the antibacterial filter daily


1 • Remove the vacuum tubing from the antibacterial
filter, leaving only the filter connected to the machine.
• Press the vacuum regulator knob and turn it to the
right to set maximum vacuum.
• Switch on the pump and read the value on the vacuum
gauge.
• Replace the antibacterial filter if this value is higher
than 10 kPa.
Change the antibacterial filter weekly
2 • Regardless of the previous test, change the filter every
week.
• After all reusable components (jars, lids, silicone
tubing) have been disinfected and sterilized, replace
the antibacterial filter.
• Dispose the dirty filter according to infection control
guidelines.
