I)INTRODUCTION TO KENYA’S TOURISM CIRCUITS
Kenya, located in East Africa, is globally recognised for its rich biodiversity, cultural
heritage and diverse landscapes. To facilitate tourism development and promote regional
attractions, Kenya’s destination are categorised into six major tourism Circuits. Each Circuit
showcases a unique aspect to of Kenya’s natural beauty and cultural diversity, catering to a
range of tourism types including wildlife safaris, beach holidays, eco-tourism, cultural tours
and adventure travel.
II) NAIROBI TOUR CIRCUITS
A.INTRODUCTION TO THE CIRCUITS
Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and largest city. The name Nairobi comes from a Maasai phrase
‘Enkare Nairobi ‘ which means ‘cool water’ attributed to the city’s Nairobi river. Nairobi
boasts of a rich culture and heritage, a beautiful national park. It’s the only city in the world
that has a National Park.
B.DESTINATIONS AND KEY ATTRACTIONS
a)Bomas of Kenya
Located 10km from the city centre, Bomas is a cultural village whose name in Swahili means
‘enclosed homesteads’. Bomas displays villages that are affiliated to the various ethnic
communities in Kenya. It exhibits the diversity in culture, living styles, crafts, music and
dancing in Kenya. It is also home to the largest auditorium in Africa. A visit to this place is a
chance to explore the thrilling traditional dances as well as acrobatics and African foods at
Utamaduni restaurant.
b)Nairobi National Museum
Located at the Museum Hill, few minutes drive from city centre is the Nairobi National
Museum. It is easily accessible by both public and private means. The Museum is the
flagship museum for the National Museums of Kenya and it houses collections of the Kenyan
history, heritage, culture, nature and art. It is also famous as a distinctive venue for events
such as workshops, cocktails, conferences among others. Also located at the Nairobi national
museum is the Snake Park with live specimens of Kenya’s most common reptiles as well as
Botanical Gardens ideal for a nature walk.
d)Railway Museum
The Railway Museum in Kenya was established 1971 by East African
Railways. It boasts of a rich history of the railroad in Kenya and its role in
the growth of the nation. The museum exhibits fascinating collections of
train and ship models, photographs from the original construction of the
Uganda railway, railway magazines, maps and drawings. Also displayed is

b)Karen Blixen Museum
At the foot of Ngong Hills lies one of Nairobi’s top tourist attraction site. Karen Blixen
museum, is a former home to the ‘out of Africa’ author Karen Blixen. She lived in the house
from 1917-1931 where she established a coffee farm. Visitors get to tour and learn more
about the colonial farm house and see the coffee drying plant.

e)Nairobi National Park
Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world that is located in a city. The park
is home to Africa’s rich wildlife such as lions, gazelles, buffaloes, warthogs, cheetahs, zebras
and giraffes among others. It also has over 400 species of birds hence making it a perfect
destination for birding. the park features walking trails especially the Nairobi Safari Walk,
picnic sites as well as campsites. At the main gate of Nairobi National Park is the David
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery, where visitors get a chance to bond with baby elephants and
orphaned rhinos.
f)Giraffe Centre
The Giraffe Centre is located in Lang’ata, Nairobi. It was created in order to protect the
highly endangered Rothschild’s giraffes found on the grasslands of Africa. Here tourists can
interact and hand-feed the giraffes from a raised wooden structure, spot warthogs snorting
about in the mud and take a nature walk on the self-guided forest walk through the adjacent
Gogo river bird sanctuary.
g)Giraffe Manor
Just next to Giraffe centre is Giraffe manor, an exclusive hotel, best known for its resident
herd of Rothschild’s giraffes. The giraffes are known to visit in the morning and evening,
poking their long necks into windows hoping for a treat before retreating to their forest
sanctuary. Activities in the manor include; encounter with giraffes, horse riding and learn
about the local culture and history.
h)Nairobi Gallery in CBD
The Nairobi gallery is a gazetted monument that sits at the city centre. The national
monument displays temporary art exhibits and the Murumbi African heritage collections. The
historic house in which the gallery is found was constructed in 1913. It was the PC 's office
building and was commonly referred to as ‘Hatches, Matches and Dispatches’ since births,
marriages and deaths that were recorded there.The Murumbi African Heritage collection
entails ancient sculptures, paintings, and artifacts from the diverse African cultures. This
collection was obtained by Joseph and Sheila Murumbi whose biographies are also told in
one of the galleries.
i)National Archives
This is a museum located in the Nairobi city center that highlights Kenyan tribal culture,
heritage, rich history and politics. It also displays historical documents, collections of
photographs, art as well as postage stamps. Also found in the building is a reading room used
for personal as well as professional projects.
j)Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC)
The KICC is a 29-storey building located in the city square of Nairobi. The eye catching
landmark is an internationally known venue for conferences, meetings and exhibitions among
other special events. The building has hosted various international conferences, seminars,
exhibitions and summits.The building’s roof top has an amazing viewing platform for the city
that is also ideal for taking beautiful photos.
k)Karura Forest
Karura forest, one of the largest urban forests in the world, is a perfect destination for
nature walks, bike riding as well as picnics. It provides a perfect environment to interact
with nature, watch monkeys climb over the trees and see indigenous trees found in the
forest. It’s ideal for quiet meditation at the lily lake or enjoying the waterfall in the forest.
l)Ngong Forest
Ngong Hills is a scenic ridge located southwest of Nairobi, Kenya, forming part of the Great
Rift Valley. The hills rise to about 2,460 meters (8,071 feet) and offer panoramic views of
Nairobi city on one side and the expansive Rift Valley on the other. Popular for hiking,
picnics, and nature walks, Ngong Hills is a favorite destination for both local and
international tourists. Wind turbines installed along the hills harness renewable energy,
adding a modern touch to the natural landscape. The cool climate, rolling green hills, and rich
cultural history make Ngong Hills a must-visit site in Kenya.

III)RIFTVALLEY CIRCUIT
A.INTRODUCTION TO THE CIRCUIT
The Great Rift Valley cuts across Kenya from North to the South. It’s very pronounced
and can best seen in Kenya hence the region’s name. It’s ideal for wildlife safaris, Eco-
tourism, bird watching and cultural tourism, drawing both domestic and international
tourist year-round. The Maasai culture and the annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai
Mara are major highlights.
B.DESTINATIONS AND ATTRACTIONS
a) Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is popularly known as the home of flamingos and other bird
species, a beautiful wildlife haven! The park offers visitors the pleasure of the wide
ecological diversity as one enjoys activities like bird watching, hiking, picnic, and game
drives.Its a paradise with over 450 species.
b)Lake Elementaita
Elementaita is derived from the Maasai word muteita, meaning “dust place”, a reference
to the dryness and dustiness of the area, especially between January and March. In the
south-to-north sequence of Rift Valley lakes, Elementaita is between Lake Naivasha and
Lake Nakuru. The major Nairobi-Nakuru highway runs along the nearby escarpment
affording motorists a spectacular vista towards the lake. Today the lake is a protected area
due to its bird life, and has been named as an UNESCO heritage site together with Lake
Nakuru and Lake Bogoria.
c)Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru
county, which lies north west of Nairobi. It is part of the Great Rift Valley. The name
derives from the local Maasai name Nai’posha, meaning “rough water” because of the
sudden storms which can arise.
d) Hells Gate National park
It was named for the intense geothermal activity within its boundaries, the Hell’s Gate
National Park is a remarkable quarter of the Great Rift Valley. Spectacular scenery
including the towering cliffs, water-gouged gorges, stark rock towers, scrub clad
volcanoes and belching plumes of geothermal steam make it one of the most atmospheric
Parks in Africa. Hell’s Gate is an ideal venue for a day trip from Nairobi where, in
addition to the bio-diversity that includes raptors, visitors can enjoy mountain biking,
rock climbing and a natural spa.
e)Mt. Longonot National Park
Rising from the floor of the Great Rift Valley like a monolith is the extinct volcano of
Mount Longonot. A unique feature is the thick forest that lies within the crater of the
mountain. The crater rim also provides great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley
all the way to Lake Naivasha. Major wildlife attractions at Mount Longonot include
buffaloes, elands, lion, leopard, bushbucks, common zebra, giraffe and Grant’s
gazelles.Its unique for hiking.
f) Lake Oloiden
It is located in Naivasha sub-county, approximately 90 kilometres from Nairobi CBD and
60 minutes from Nakuru. It is located very close to Lake Naivasha with a man-made
canal connecting the two lakes. The visitor’s get to boat ride to enjoy the view of Mt
Longonot, Mt Aberdare, Mt.Eburru , and dine in the bush,wake up with birds, count the
trees in water.
g) Maasai Mara National Reserve
Its one of Kenya’s most famous wildlife conservation areas, located in the south
western part of the country along the border with Tanzania. It is renowned for its
abundant wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), and
the annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross from
the Serengeti in search of greener pastures. The reserve is named after the Maasai people,
who inhabit the region, and the Mara River that flows through it. It offers exceptional
game viewing and is a top destination for safari tourism.

1.INTRODUCTION TO THE CIRCUIT
Kenya’s coast is probably on every tourist’s plan, and rightly so. It is home to beautiful
Swahili, Arab and other cultures and cuisine. The Coast provides various attractions
found in Lamu, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Taita-Taveta and Tana River Counties. From
sandy beaches to historical sites and many others, the coastal circuit is a roundup of some
of the best that Kenya offers.

1. Mombasa
Fort Jesus: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 16th-century fort offers insights into the
region’s colonial history.
