INTRODUCTION
WHO, UNICEF and other International partners introduced a new strategy known as
Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) in 1995 is an effort to bring
health equity for child heath. The strategy emphasizes on integrated holistic
approach for treating sick children. This strategy has been expanded in India with
a view to include all neonates and renamed as Integrated Management of
Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI).
The IMNCI (Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illnesses) strategy
was launched in India in 2003. It was piloted under the Reproductive and Child
Health (RCH) - phase I programme and later adopted as a key strategy under RCH -
phase II. By June 2010, it had been implemented in 223 of India's 640 districts.
We, students of 6th semester of [Link] nursing Govt college of Nursing , Serampore
SD/SS hospital ,had arranged a group project on " IMNCI" in 15/05/25 , from 11
DEFINITION OF IMNCI
AM to 2 PM in 6th semester classroom of college building.
IMNCI is an integrated approach to child heath that focusses
on well being of whole child. It focusses primarily on most
common causes of child mortality i.e. diarrhea, pneumonia,
measles, malaria, malnutrition, affecting under five children
aged including both preventive and curative elements to be
implemented by families.
OBJECTIVES OF IMNCI
● To reduce death in children.
● To reduce frequency of illness
● To bring down the severity of illness and disability.
● To contribute to OF
IMPORTANCE improvement
IMNCIof growth and
development of children.
The IMNCI is important because it provides a comprehensive approach to child
health that focusses on the well being of the whole child. Here is a brief overview of
its importance :
● Reduces child mortality : It targets the major causes of illness and death in
children under five, like pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, malnutrition.
● Promotes early diagnosis and treatment : Health workers are trained to
quickly identify and manage common childhood illnesses using standard
guidelines.
● Improve health care quality : Encourages proper assessment, classification,
treatment and follow-up.

● All sick children from 2 months to 5 year of age must be examined for
general danger signs which indicate needs for immediate referral or
admission to a hospital. They must be routinely assessed for major
symptoms like cough, dyspnea, diarrhea, fever and ear problems.
● All sick young infants and children of 2 months up to 5 years must be
routinely assessed for nutritional and immunization status.

● The IMNCI guidelines address many but not all the major reason of a sick
infant or child. The guidelines do not describe the management of trauma
or other acute emergencies due to accidents and injuries.
● IMNCI encourage active participation of caretakers in treatment of infants
and childrn, counselling of caretakers about home care.

F - IMNCI
From November 2009, IMNCI has been reintroduced as F – IMNCI (F- facility)with
added component of asphyxia management and care of sick newborn at facility
level along with all other components included under IMNCI.
F-IMNCI will help in skill building of the medical officers and staff nurses posted
in these health facilities to provide IMNCI care.
OUR LIMITATIONS AND FEEDBACK FROM
TEACHERS
● It was little late to start the programme for arranging the av aids properly.
● The power point presentation must be prepared more accurately.
● The group presentation should be improved.
● Programme must not be monotonous.
● The refreshment arrangements was good and overall group project got a
appreciation from the teachers.
CONCLUSION
The Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) represents a
comprehensive and evidence-based approach to addressing the major causes of
morbidity and mortality among children under five. By standardizing the assessment,
classification, treatment, and follow-up of common childhood illnesses, IMNCI
enhances the quality of care delivered at the primary health care level.
We students of 6 th semester, [Link] Nursing , would like to convey our gratitude to our
respected Principal madam, Madam Sushmita Chakraborty and other colleges
faculties to give us opportunity to organise the group project on IMNCI in college.
