Kindergarten Writing Lesson Plan (Weekly Cycle)

CCSS Alignment:

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating,


and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts.

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2: Demonstrate command of the


conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and
spelling.

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A: Print many upper- and lowercase


letters.

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.E: Use frequently occurring prepositions


and spacing between words.

Weekly Theme Example: Pets (can be replaced with any theme)

Color-Coded Writing Helpers

 Green Cat 🟢 = Capital Letters and First Category on Tree (or Circle)
Map

 Blue Fox 🔵 = Finger Spaces and Second Category on Tree (or Circle)
Map

 Red Penguin 🔴 = Punctuation and Third Category on Tree (or Circle)


Map

Students use green, blue, and red crayons to mark and correct their writing,
and to complete graphic organizers.

Day 1: Circle Map & Theme Sentence

Objective: Generate ideas and write a theme sentence.


Materials:

 Circle map worksheet

 Green, blue, and red crayons

Activities:
1. Introduce the weekly theme (e.g., Pets).

2. Create a class circle map on chart paper to model brainstorming.

3. Students create their own circle maps with 4–5 ideas related to the
theme.

4. Use ideas to help students compose one complete sentence about the
theme.

5. Students write the sentence, then use their crayons to check:

o Green cat for capital letter

o Blue fox for finger spaces

o Red penguin for punctuation

Day 2: T-Chart Writing Prep

Objective: Sort writing elements and generate three sentences.


Materials:

 Red/blue/green column T-chart

 Word bank (optional)

 Crayons

Activities:

1. Review capital letters, finger spaces, and punctuation.

2. Fill in the T-chart columns:

o Green column: Words that begin sentences

o Blue column: Common connectors or prepositions (to, with,


and, in)

o Red column: Ending punctuation (! ? .)

3. Students use chart content to compose 3 theme-based sentences.

4. Self-check with the mascots and crayons.

Day 3: Rough Draft & Proofreading


Objective: Draft a short paragraph and edit for conventions.
Materials:

 Rough draft paper

 Editing checklist with mascots

 Crayons

Activities:

1. Use sentences from Day 1 and Day 2 to create a 3-sentence rough


draft.

2. Model editing: Read aloud and identify errors or missing elements.

3. Students reread and use crayons to:

o Circle capital letters in green

o Trace finger spaces in blue

o Underline punctuation in red

Day 4: Final Draft

Objective: Neatly write a polished paragraph with correct conventions.


Materials:

 Final draft writing paper (with lines and space for illustration)

 Pencils and crayons

Activities:

1. Carefully copy the revised rough draft onto the final draft paper.

2. Illustrate the writing.

3. Use checklist to self-review using color-coded conventions.

Day 5: Commemorative Craft

Objective: Celebrate writing with a themed art project.


Materials:

 Craft supplies related to the weekly theme


 Student final drafts for display

Activities:

1. Students complete a theme-based art project (e.g., pet masks,


drawings).

2. Display final drafts with artwork on a bulletin board.

3. Hold an “Author Share” where students read their writing to a partner


or the class.
