Spring 2017 Introduction to Sequential control
Assignment 1
1. Sketch the circuit diagram of a sequential control system with the
following features.
a. Motor starter 1 M is energized by pressing a momentary contact start
switch.
a. Motor starter 1 M can be de-energized only by pressing a momentary
contact stop switch.
2. Modify the circuit diagram of Exercise 1 to include the following
additional features.
a. Limit switch 1L must be closed before the start switch can energize
the motor starter 1 M.
b. Either opening limit switch 1L or pressing the stop switch can de-
energize motor starter 1 M.
3. Modify the circuit diagram of Exercise 1 to include the following
additional features.
a. Limit switch 1L must close before the start switch can energize the
motor starter I M.
b. Opening limit switch 1L cannot de energize the motor starter. The
motor starter 1 M can be de energized only by pressing a momentary
contact stop switch.
4. Sketch the circuit diagram of a sequential control system with the -
following features.
a. A hydraulic cylinder is operated by a two-position, four-way valve as
shown in Figure 3.17.
b. A 15-horsepower electric motor is controlled by a motor starter, as
shown in Figure 3.14.
c. An interlock is provided so that the hydraulic cylinder cannot operate
unless the 15-horsepower motor starter is energized.
5. Modify the circuit diagram of the sequential control system of problem 4 to
include ON-delay Timer, such that the solenoid (Sol b) is energized 5
seconds later from the pump-motor.
1
Electromechanical components are- frequently used in sequential control. Figures 3.13 .5
and 3,15 contain schematic symbols of some of the most common sequential control
components. (a) Write the title of each component. (b) Explain the operation of two
.components, give example
