HP Notebook PCs – Using Battery Check in Advanced Mode

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows 7 and Vista.

HP Battery Check is a utility that provides a simple but accurate test of the battery. It can be launched from the HP Support Assistant.

For convenience, a simple colored graphic is use to indicate the status of the battery. The explanation of the status provides minimal
information. At times, more detailed information is requested. The Battery Check provides a higher of support information: Advanced
Mode.

To get the latest version of the HP Battery Check, download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant (in English) for
Windows 7 and Vista.

Normal mode

Advanced mode

With Version 5.0 or higher, the user can change the settings to an Advanced mode to display all of the battery properties.
The battery test result code is displayed in parenthesis next to the status. The Warranty ID functions the same in Basic View
and Advanced view.

What do the different battery test results mean?

The HP Battery Check displays the status of the battery. If additional action is needed, a message displays. For instance, you may
be prompted to connect the AC power adapter to perform the test.

The following graphics and text will be used based on status code returned from test logic.

The Battery Status is an indicator of how well the multiple cells for the battery are
OK 00h
charging and discharging. An OK Status indicates the battery is functioning correctly.

The battery is functioning correctly, but the AC adapter is not attached. To completely
OK – No AC 01h
test your battery, please attach the AC adapter.

The battery is functioning correctly, but your system has two batteries installed. To
completely test your batteries, assure the AC adapter is inserted and remove one of the
OK - Multi 02h
batteries. After the results are determined, remove the tested battery and insert the other
battery.

The battery is functioning correctly, but the battery is operating at a high temperature is
OK – Temp O3h not charging. Please check the battery again after 30 minutes or when the battery has
returned to a normal operating temperature.

The battery is functioning correctly, but due to the normal aging of the battery your
battery life between charges is now significantly shorter than when the battery was new.
OK 10h
You may want to consider purchasing a new battery to optimize your computing
experience.

The battery is functioning correctly, but the AC adapter is not attached. To completely
OK – No AC 11h
test your battery, please attach the AC adapter.

The battery is functioning correctly, but your system has two batteries installed. To
OK – Multi 12h
completely test your batteries, assure the AC adapter is inserted and remove one of the

The battery is functioning correctly, but it needs to be calibrated. You will experience

shorter battery life between charges if the battery is not calibrated.

In Warranty The battery is reporting a failure and needs to be replaced as soon as


possible. You battery may be covered by your HP Warranty. Please contact HP.
Replace 4xh Out of Warranty The battery is reporting a failure and needs to be replaced as soon as
possible. Based on the age of your PC and battery, it appears it is no longer covered by
your HP Warranty.

Based on the charge capacity of your battery it has reached the end of its useful life. You

Primary battery A battery was not detected. If a battery is installed, please re-insert the
battery and AC adapter to retest the battery.
No battery 60h Secondary battery A battery was not detected, but your system supports second

An error was encountered trying to access the battery. Please re-insert the battery and

Displaying Warranty ID

The Warranty ID and Product ID is displayed when the battery status returned is REPLACE (4xh) according to the following table.

Battery can used as a spare “SOK” code will be used to indicate the battery is
good to use as a spare.

Due to regional differences in handling battery warranty, the warranty ID will only be displayed when battery is in the first year of warranty.

If a region offers more than one year warranty on a batter, it will have to be handled as an exception process using the REOOW and
REOOW-L Warranty ID values.

Batteries newer than the system are assumed to be a battery purchased by the user or a replacement battery. For determining if the
battery is in warranty, the battery manufactured date + 90 days grace is used for this scenario.

Displaying Calibration Instructions

When the Calibration status (2xh) is returned, Battery Check displays a Calibrate button to allow the user to launch a separate pop-up
window with instructions on how to calibrate the battery in their system. The Auto Calibrate function from UEFI System Diagnostics will
be used if it is available on the system and the current version of HP Support Assistant is installed. If UEFI is not available, instructions
are provided to the user for calibrating the battery. The recommended calibration method varies by battery, and is based on the results
of the battery test.

Battery Check displays a fulfillment button when the following conditions are detected. See What do the different battery test results mean?

The fulfillment buttons are only displayed for locations and products that are enabled to provide the fulfillment of the part or service.

• Product Line - HPSF Product Line
• Include/exclude - SYSID or ProductID
• Status - display for value(s) of status
• Device - display for device(s)
• Warranty - display for warranty status
• URL - Location to launch in browser
• Text index - Index of text in translation table
