ACTION PLAN
This project is based on fast fashion. First we need to know, what does the term fast fashion
mean? The term refers to “cheaply produced and priced garments that copy the latest catwalk
styles and get pumped quickly through stores in order to maximize on current trends.”

This project contains a survey of 10 people on 11 questions about fast fashion. It analyzes
people’s understanding of the term fast fashion and their contribution to it. It also evinces the
role of social media in fast fashion.

This project is an initiation to propagate the message to the people that fast fashion is harmful
for the environment. It prompts people to reflect on their splurge on fashion products. It
urges them to be mindful of what they buy and think about environment. This project
promotes people to be reluctant towards the cheap, low quality products and move towards
high quality, sustainable products.

It concludes with a few measures that can be taken to prevent dissemination of fast fashion.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I was inspired to make my project on the topic ‘Fast Fashion’ as in today’s generation social
media encourages a lot of things which are destructive. Fast fashion was among them.

The term fast fashion has become more prominent in conversations surrounding fashion,
sustainability, and environmental consciousness. I want people to be more aware of how
they are undermining the detrimental impact of fast fashion on environment.

We must take measures to reduce fast fashion has a significant environmental impact.
According to the UN Environment Programme, the industry is the second-biggest consumer
of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions – more than all
international flights and maritime shipping combined. Unfortunately, the industry’s problems
are often overlooked by consumers.
REPORT AND CONCLUSION
From these questions we can conclude that:

1. More than half of the people buy clothes every few months. We must reduce the
frequency of buying clothes. We must move towards sustainable fashion.
2. All of the people follow current fashion trends which make them susceptible to buy new
clothes. The craze for following the fashion trends is one of the major factors for
encouragement of fast fashion.
3. Quarter of the people buy clothes online. 37.5% people buy clothes from malls and the
rest from shops. We should promote shopping from local shops.
4. Majority of the people follow fashion influencers on social media. They influence people
to buy “trendy” clothes. They cultivate a thought process in people’s mind that following
current fashion trends will make them fit better into the society.
5. Social media is the major source of people finding out about new trends.
6. Mostly people evaluate other people according to their clothing. This makes people
conscious about themselves and creates a societal pressure to buy new clothes. They start
feeling inferior if they don’t get involved with current trends
7. Majority of people like repeating their outfits.
8. Here 5 being the most and 1 being the least, a minority find sustainability in fashion
important. We should make people aware of the negative impacts that fast fashion causes.
We should ensure that people know the importance of sustainability.
9. 50% of the people aren’t even aware of the term fast fashion.
10. ‘Fashion trends’ is one of the major factors which influence a majority of people’s
purchase decision. People should buy clothes according to their need and not according to
some fashion trend.
11. People spend fairly a good sum of money on clothes every year.
STUDENT REFLECTIONS
During the project making, I learnt time management and how to cooperate with people to
get their responses. It also helped me to learn how to analyze their answers. I also had to take
many decisions during the project making, such as how many questions were to be taken,
how many responses were to be taken and which questions were to be put up. This enhanced
my decision making abilities. While making this project, I had to bring out the creativity
within me. I learnt how to manage projects and assignments more efficiently. Researching
about fast fashion for the project boosted my curiosity and allowed me to dive deep into this
topic. While taking responses from my friends, it helped me to reconnect with them and
made me realize that positive relationships are very important as they are the ones who help
us when we need their help.

FAST FASHION: INTRODUCTION

Fast fashion is the business model of replicating recent catwalk trends and high-fashion
designs, mass-producing them at a low cost, and bringing them to retail quickly while
demand is at its highest. The term fast fashion is also used generically to describe the
products of this business model, particularly clothing and footwear. Retailers who employ the
fast fashion strategy include Primark, H&M, Shein, and Zara, all of which have become large
multinationals by driving high turnover of inexpensive seasonal and trendy clothing that
appeals to fashion-conscious consumers.

Fast fashion grew during the late 20th century as manufacturing of clothing became less
expensive—the result of more efficient supply chains, new quick response manufacturing
methods, and greater reliance on low-cost labor from the apparel manufacturing industries of
South, Southeast, and East Asia, where women make up 85–90% of the garment workforce.
Labor practices in fast fashion are often exploitative, and due to the gender concentration of
the garment industry, women are more vulnerable.

Fast fashion's environmental impact has also been the subject of controversy. The global
fashion industry is responsible for 8–10% of global carbon emissions per year, to which fast
fashion is a large contributor. The low cost of production, favoring synthetic materials,
chemicals, and minimal pollution abatement measures have led to excess waste.
