Information Air-cooled Screw Chiller Economizer Check Valve
Removal and Backflow Control Instructions

GENERAL
Updates have been made to the design of the economizer line feeding into the compressor port, to remove the check
valve from new production YVAA and YVFA chillers. In the case of economizer check valve failures on existing
YVAA and YVFA chillers in the field, it is critical to completely remove the check valve from the economizer line
and follow the steps provided in this Service Instruction to update the chiller software to the latest production ver-
sion and setup the software to allow for economizer backflow controls.
Steps to install and setup the software after economizer check valve has been removed:
1. Remove the damaged/failed check valve from the economizer line using a pipe cutter appropriate for the pipe
size. A reciprocating saw should not be used to cut and remove the check valve. Proper care must be taken to
clean the economizer line and ensure no debris is present in the system after the check valve has been removed.
2. Once the check valve is removed and economizer line is serviced back in place, perform leak check, evacua-
tion and charging as needed, per the instructions provided in the IOM. Refer to Form 201.28-NM1.1 for YVAA
IOM and 201.31-ICOM1 for YVFA IOM..
3. After the system(s) is charged to the nameplate data, update the chiller software to the latest version by follow-
ing the procedure listed below:
a. Record all the unit settings prior to performing the software upgrade.
b. Enter the UNIT SETUP Mode by pressing PROGRAM key, entering the Passcode 4245, and pressing
ENTER.
c. Under Unit Setup mode, scroll down by using the arrow keys on the keypad to find DATA LOG TO SD
Card and turn this option OFF.
d. Power down the unit following LOTO procedures.
e. Verify that power has been completely removed and unit is safe to enter per LOTO procedures.
f. Open main VSD panel door.

Work on this equipment should only be done by properly trained personnel who are qualified to work on this
type of equipment. Failure to comply with this requirement could expose the worker, the equipment and the building
and its inhabitants to the risk of injury or property damage.
The instructions on this service information letter are written assuming the individual who will perform this work
is a fully trained HVAC & R journeyman or equivalent, certified in refrigerant handling and recovery techniques, and
knowledgeable with regard to electrical lock out/tag out procedures. The individual performing this work should be
aware of and comply with all Johnson Controls, national, state and local safety and environmental regulations while
carrying out this work. Before attempting to work on any equipment, the individual should be thoroughly familiar
with the equipment by reading and understanding the associated service literature applicable to the equipment. If
you do not have this literature, you may obtain it by contacting a Johnson Controls Service Office.
Should there be any question concerning any aspect of the tasks outlined in this bulletin, please consult a
Johnson Controls Service Office prior to attempting the work. Please be aware that this information may be time
sensitive and that Johnson Controls reserves the right to revise this information at any time. Be certain you are

g. Remove currently installed SD card found in the Microboard SD card slot.

h. Use the SD card with the new software version (P/N: 031-03476-010) and rename the software file
“SOFTWARE.ELF” before installing the SD Card on the Microboard.
i. Insert the SD Card with the new software file into the SD Card reader slot on the Microboard
j. Close main VSD panel door.
k. Remove LOTO and provide power to the chiller. DO NOT START THE CHILLER. Unit switch must
be OFF.
l. Enter the UNIT SETUP Mode by pressing PROGRAM key, entering the Passcode 4245, and pressing
ENTER. Scroll thru the Unit Setup mode menu to find UPDATE SOFTWARE FROM SD CARD and
press ENABLE, followed by ENTER (check mark sign) on the keypad.
m. Allow the chiller to update the software.
n. After the chiller has finished updating the software, press SERVICE followed by the ENTER (check
mark) key to verify that the software has been updated to the latest version.
o. Enter the UNIT SETUP Mode by pressing PROGRAM key, entering the Passcode 4245, and pressing
ENTER.
p. Scroll thru the menu to find DATA LOG TO SD CARD and turn this option ON.
q. Verify all unit settings previously recorded are set in the chiller. Adjust as required.
4. After the latest software version has been uploaded on the chiller, enable the Economizer Backflow controls by
following the steps provided below:
The procedure to enable economizer backflow controls should only be used for YVAA and YVFA
chillers with economizer check valve removed from the economizer line. Correct profile number for
economizer backflow control parameters profile should be selected for the YVAA/YVFA model and
compressor type. Failure to select the correct profile number could result in malfunction of econo-
mizer backflow controls.

a. With the Unit switch off, enter the UNIT SETUP Mode by pressing PROGRAM key, entering the Pass-
code 4245, and pressing ENTER.
b. Under the Unit Setup mode, scroll down to ECONOMIZER BACKFLOW CONTROL by using the arrow
keys on the keypad and ENABLE this option. Confirm this action by pressing the ENTER (check mark)
key.
c. Once Economizer Backflow Control is enabled, the next step will be to select the Economizer Backflow
profile. Under the Unit Setup mode, scroll down to ECONOMIZER BACKFLOW CONTROL PARAM-
ETERS PROFILE using the arrow keys on the keypad and select the correct profile number for the com-
pressor type and chiller model and press ENTER (check mark) key. Economizer Backflow parameters
profile number is dependent on the chiller model and compressor type and care must be taken to ensure
that the correct profile number is selected for the specific compressor type and chiller model. The profile
number can be selected from the following table:
