Tutorial 11 VVVVB

The document is a tutorial for Engineering Mathematics 214, focusing on various matrix properties including orthogonality, diagonalizability, and eigenvalues. It presents several problems requiring the determination of whether given matrices are orthogonal or diagonalizable, and includes proofs related to orthogonal matrices and their characteristics. Additionally, it discusses the implications of eigenvalues in symmetric and orthogonal matrices.

2. Determine whether each of the following matrices are (orthogonally) diagonalizable or not. If so,
determine the (orthogonal) matrix P and the diagonal matrix D for which P DP −1 is the given matrix.

4. If A is an orthogonal matrix, prove that A−1 is also orthogonal.

Indien A ’n ortogonale matriks is, bewys dat sy inverse A−1 ook ortogonaal is.
5. Prove that if λ is an eigenvalue of an symmetric, orthogonal matrix, then λ = 1 or λ = −1.
6. Suppose that A and P are square matrices and that P is nonsingular. Show that the matrices A and
P −1 AP have the same characteristic equation, as wel as that the matrices P A and AP have the same
characteristic equation.
7. Prove that if an n×n matrix is diagonalizable and only has one eigenvalue, then the matrix is diagonal.
diagonaal.
