Homework Sheet 2

The document is a homework sheet containing three questions related to systems of differential equations. It requires calculations for homogenous systems, transition matrices, Wronskians, and responses to inputs for given systems. Each question builds upon the previous one, exploring different aspects of system dynamics and stability analysis.

Homework Sheet 2

Question 1
 1 
t +1 0 
t + 1
Given the following system : x =  x+ u
 1 1  t + 1
 t + 1 
a) Calculate the solution for the homogenous system for initial conditions x ( t0 ) .
Method : First solve the differential equation of x1 by sepearation of variables and
integration. Notice that x1 also appears in the homogenous equation of x2 . First, calculate
the response to the initial conditions “without its presence”, and then consider it as an
input – and calculate the response using convolution.
b) Calculate the Transition Matrix for which xh ( t ) =  ( t , t0 ) x ( t0 ) .
1  0 
c) Find the Wronskian using the two following initial conditions :   ,  
0  1 
d) Calculate the Transition Matrix using the Wronskian. Is the result identical to the previous
sections?
e) Find the response to a step input on time t 0 with zero initial conditions.
1 t  t0
u ( t ) =  ( t − t0 ) =  : t = t0
0 t  t0

Question 2
 −1 e2t  10
Repeat all the sections on Question 1 for the new system : x =   x +  u
 0 −1 0

Question 3
Given the following system :
a) Find the Transition Matrix.
b) Find the Impulse Response
Matrix. What did you receive,
and why?
c) Is the system stable?
