OBJECTIVES:

a. to apply law of substitution

b. to perform composition of functions
c. to develop perseverance & accuracy
ACTIVITY:

If f(x)= x² – 2x + 3. Find f(0), f(-1); f(x+1)

and f(x²).

a. f(0) =
b. f(-1) =
c. f(x+1) =
d. f(x²) =
ACTIVITY: Answers

If f(x)= x² – 2x + 3. Find f(0), f(-1); f(x+1)

and f(x²).

a. f(0) = 0² – 2(0) + 3 = 3
b. f(-1) = -1² – 2(-1) + 3 = 1+2+3 = 6
c. f(x+1) = (x+1)² – 2(x+1) + 3
= [x²+2x + 1]– 2x –2+3 = x² + 2
d. f(x²) = (𝑥 ) –2(𝑥) + 3 = 𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟑

Definition of Term

The composition of the function f with g is

defined by the equation: 𝒇◦𝒈 (𝐱) = 𝐟 𝐠 𝐱

The domain of the composition of the function

𝒇◦𝒈 is the set of all x such that
1. x is in the domain of g; and
2. g(x) is in the domain of f.
Examples:

Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x²+4, find:

a. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝐱 b. 𝒈◦𝒇 𝐱 c. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝟐

Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x²+4, find:

a. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝐱 b. 𝒈◦𝒇 𝐱 c. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝟐

Solution:
Given f(x) = 4x – 5
a. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝐱 = f(g(x))= 4(g(x)) – 5 ;
= 4 (x²+4) – 5
= 4x² + 16 – 5
Thus 𝒇◦𝒈 𝐱 = 4x² + 11
Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x²+4, find:

Solution:
Given f(x) = 4x – 5
b. 𝒈◦𝒇 𝐱 = g(f(x))= (f(x))² + 4 ;
= (4x – 5 )² + 4
= 16x² – 40x + 25 + 4
Thus 𝒈◦𝒇 𝐱 = 16x² – 40x + 29
Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x²+4, find:

Solution:
Given f(x) = 4x – 5
c. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝟐 = f(g(2))= 4(g(2)) – 5 ;
= = 4 (2²+4) – 5
= 4(4 + 4) – 5
= 4(8) – 5
Thus 𝒇◦𝒈 𝐱 = 27
Application: 1

Find a. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝐱 b. 𝒈◦𝒇 𝐱 c. 𝒇◦𝒈 𝟑

1. f(x) = 2x and g(x) = x + 5
2. f(x) = 4x and g(x) = x – 3
3. f(x) = 2x + 1 and g(x) = 3x – 2
4. f(x) = 5x – 3 and g(x) = x² – 3
