GED Math Notes: Number Properties, Fractions, Decimals, Percents, Integers
1. Number Properties
- Commutative Property: a + b = b + a, a x b = b x a
- Associative Property: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
- Distributive Property: a x (b + c) = a x b + a x c
- Identity Property: a + 0 = a, a x 1 = a
- Inverse Property: a + (-a) = 0, a x (1/a) = 1 (a not equal 0)
- Even & Odd: even +/- even = even, odd x odd = odd, even x any = even
2. Fractions
- Simplifying: divide numerator and denominator by GCF
- Adding/Subtracting: use common denominators
- Multiplying: multiply numerators and denominators
- Dividing: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction
3. Decimals
- Place values: tenths, hundredths, thousandths...
- Adding/Subtracting: align decimal points
- Multiplying: ignore decimals first, count decimal places later
- Dividing: move decimal to make divisor a whole number
4. Percents
- Percent means 'per 100' (e.g., 25% = 25/100 = 0.25)
- Convert between percent, fraction, and decimal:
50% = 1/2 = 0.5
- Finding a percent: part = percent x whole
- Increase/Decrease: final = original x (1 +/- percent)

5. Integers
- Integers include positive, negative whole numbers, and 0
- Adding: same signs, add and keep sign; different signs, subtract and keep sign of larger
- Subtracting: change to adding the opposite
- Multiplying/Dividing:
same signs = positive, different signs = negative
