Fluid Dynamics Simulation: Smooth vs
Rough Channel
This report presents the analysis of fluid flow through both smooth and rough channels. The
analysis is based on numerical simulations using finite element methods. We explore the
convergence of velocity and pressure fields, velocity profiles, friction factors, and the impact
of surface roughness on flow resistance.
1. Convergence Analysis
The convergence of the fluid flow solution is verified by examining the time series of
velocity components (Ux and Uy) and pressure at selected probes. Both smooth and rough
channel cases showed stabilization after several timesteps, indicating that steady-state
conditions were reached.

2. Velocity Profile Analysis
The velocity profiles at fixed positions (x = 5.13 m and y = 0.52 m) were analyzed for both
smooth and rough channels. The results show clear differences in the flow characteristics
between smooth and rough surfaces. The rough channel exhibits more velocity variation
near the walls due to the turbulence induced by surface roughness.

3. Friction Factor Calculation
Friction factors were calculated using the Darcy-Weisbach equation. The results showed a
friction factor of 0.01 for the smooth channel and 0.0059 for the rough channel. This
indicates that the rough channel, despite its increased surface resistance, experiences less
drag in this particular setup.
4. Conclusion
The simulation results highlight key differences between smooth and rough channel flows.
Surface roughness significantly influences the flow profiles and frictional resistance. These
results are essential for understanding fluid transport in various engineering applications.
