Getting started

1 Find the missing numbers.

a 100 − j = 37 b 131 + j = 190
2 Zara describes a number.
She says, ‘My number has 6 thousands and 708 ones.’
a Write Zara’s numbers in digits and in words.
b Regroup her number in a different way.
3 Look at these calculations.
Explain any errors and write the correct answer.

Negative numbers are used in different situations.
• In weather reports, a temperature of −5 °C means the temperature
is 5 degrees below zero.
• On food packaging there might be instructions for storing food,
for example, ‘Store below −10 °C’.
• If you or your parents have a bank account and you spend
some money, the amount you spend may show as
a negative number.
This extract from a bank statement uses decimal numbers.
For example, $4.50 represents $4 and 50 cents.
