Pie Chart Notes

A pie chart is a circular graphic used to represent numerical proportions of a whole, ideal for comparing categorical data. Key features include a circle representing the total, sectors for parts, and angles calculated based on category frequencies. The document outlines steps to draw a pie chart, provides examples, and includes practice questions for calculating angles and drawing pie charts.

PIE CHART NOTES

1. What is a Pie Chart?

A pie chart is a circular statistical graphic that is divided into slices (sectors) to illustrate
numerical proportions. It is used to show how a total is split among different categories.

It is best used when comparing parts of a whole, especially with categorical data.

2. Key Features
• Circle – represents the total (100%)

• Sectors – represent parts of the whole

• Angles – calculated to divide the circle according to proportions

3. Formula for Angles

Angle = (Category Frequency / Total Frequency) × 360°

4. Steps to Draw a Pie Chart

1. Add all frequencies to get the total.
2. Convert each frequency to an angle using the formula.
3. Draw a circle with a compass.
4. Use a protractor to mark sectors using the calculated angles.
5. Label each sector clearly.

5. Example 1
Favorite Fruits of 40 Students:

Total = 40

Calculated Angles:

 Mango: (10/40) × 360 = 90°

 Banana: (8/40) × 360 = 72°
 Apple: (12/40) × 360 = 108°
 Orange: (6/40) × 360 = 54°
 Pineapple: (4/40) × 360 = 36°
6. Example 2
Favorite Sports:

Total = 40

Calculated Angles:

 Football: (18/40) × 360 = 162°

 Basketball: (6/40) × 360 = 54°
 Volleyball: (12/40) × 360 = 108°
 Athletics: (4/40) × 360 = 36°

7. Practice Questions
6. Question 1:
30 students were asked their favorite pet:

Cat – 6
Dog – 12
Rabbit – 9
Fish – 3

a) Calculate the angle for each pet.

b) Draw the pie chart.

7. Question 2:
Monthly expenses of a student:

Rent – Tsh 50,000

Food – Tsh 30,000
Transport – Tsh 10,000
Stationery – Tsh 10,000

a) Find total expenses.

b) Find angles for each item.
c) Draw the pie chart.
